The Shadow of Your Smile

I really did have a 'true love' in elementary school whom I still communicate with today by e-mail.

The Shadow of Your Smile

Remember when we first met, my love
Sitting in our fourth grade class
Passing each other notes as we could
Afraid of the teacher’s reprimanding sass.

Remember that first day of school
When our keen eyes shone so bright
As we stared upon each other’s face,
Weighing each other’s heartfelt delight

You made my heart go pitter-patter
Like drums beating against my chest
I found myself chattering and stuttering
Like some fool trying to be her best.

When all the butterflies settled down
So I could say a few coherent phrases
I noticed the deep shadow of your smile
And BOOM, I started reading the petals of daisies.

He loves me, he loves me not…
I recited while I watched t.v.
As I picked off petals one at a time
Wanting the last one to be, he loves me.

In the shadow of your wonderful smile
That filled my life with a brand new start
I found heaven here on earth,
In the affection of my darling sweetheart.

Oh what joy in the shadow of your smile
In memories more than fifty long years later,
I will never forget your last words to me that year,
“See you later, alligator!”

Oh Jeanette, as CJ said, you've brought back such wonderful memories of my youth as well...and maybe given me an inspiration for a new write later, I will add it to my file of ideas and when the time is right I will know it and share with the world. But, for now thank you my dear friend for sharing your childhood love with us. Young love is so special and tender during this time of a child's life...I sometimes have a little love triangle within my class and I always try to remember how I felt at this very tender age when the need comes to address a situation, and I'm sure that I don't have to tell you those situations do arise within the walls of a classroom...but as you've penned so well, we want them to be happy and fond memories for our children so when their turn comes to reflect back upon their first love fifty years prior they too will have fond memories such as you! Loved this, great write my friend!
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

Oh Jeanette, you've brought back such delicious memories of my own first 'true love'. Does anyone ever really forget their first love? Your poem is lovely and you've caught all of the tingly feelings in such a precious way.
Love,
CJ

That, in itself, is marvelous - as is your poem.

Funny how some things in your childhood stand out and you never forget them, like my first kiss at a party when I was about seven.
