Thrown Away Pennies
Does anyone have the slightest clue
Why folks throw pennies away
Do they think pennies are worthless,
Without the slightest value today?
Along the narrow, white dirt road where I walk
I frequently find aged pennies all the time
Occasionally, I find a darkened nickel
Or even a weathered quarter or dime.
Dear old daddy always told us kids
That a penny saved is a penny earned
Pennies made nickels and nickels made dimes
And pennies in the piggy bank add up, we learned.
So why do folks throw away pennies?
I seem to find them wherever I go
Where folks toss them aside like spitballs
Maybe playfully or carelessly, I don’t know.
Yes, I pick up every discolored one I find
And save them in an old quart jar
I’m not getting rich on the pennies
But I’ve found some interesting ones thus far.
So someone tell me,
Do you know why folks throw pennies away?
What is the reason why?

Across our nation, hundreds of millions of pennies are no longer in circulation but repose--like yours, Jeanette--in old quart jars. Maybe because if the bubble ever bursts completely, we can always cash them in for dollars, like your "Dear old daddy" always told you.
Now, I don't really save my pennies. On the other hand, I can't honestly explain why I have several Gatorade bottles filled with them.
