the window by my bed faces south

     last night as i slept
moon crept in on padded feet
     and lay with me
placed a silver-shadowed arm
across my naked shoulder
          whispered secrets in my ear
     told me lies i wanted to hear
          promised faithfully
                    to return

     then stole away
moments before the jealous eyes
          of a pink-tongued dawn
     came to shake me
make me ready
for the cutting realities
     of a new day

i am ready...
because the window
     by my bed faces south
and i don't have to sleep alone
          any more
