I love the movies of way back when. Little House on the Prarie being one of my favorites. I was looking at some old pics of Farmhouses and my fingers wandered to the words typed here. This is no one's house in perticular just a write.

Memories Of The Old Farmhouse
January 19, 2009
Written By: Rose Marie Rideout

Even back then I’d hear the squeak in the door,
Every footstep taken upon the old  wooden floor.
The oil lamp hung at the the stairs for all,
In fear of steep steps that someone would fall.

The nights were cold, with a hot bottle at our feet,
One offered to everyone as they rest beneath the sheets.
Mornings all too soon would come,
You could hear mom call like the beat of a drum.

Breakfast was ready as we stand around the stove,
Getting warm with every new wood and coal load.
She was the strong one in the family,
Supplying food and making sure there was plenty.

Too often just toast, cocoa and tea,
She made sure we had our fill and never went hungry.
We would take turns to carry the water in,
How I hated those  plastic containers back then.

I see her scrubbing our clothes in a tub all day,
On an old scrubbing board for that was the way.
She never complained or took a break from a chore
She greeted us with a smile after school at the door.

The old house is still standing in the field all alone,
This place to so many, once a happy, loving home.
Memories held within the walls and the floor,
A lifetime of memories, never to be anymore.

You took me there. What a noble, hard-working mother was my thought throughout the poem. Loved it.

I remember the farmhouse of my Grandfather and the first sip of cider he did handed down to his grandchildren that send ballistic our parents!
And horses, riding them is not as easy as to ride a bike, and you can't sit for a while...no sir! ! !

Oh my what a wonderful poem my friend, this is one of my favorites of yours thus far! I connect so deeply with this poem, not that I'm old enough to recall these days first hand. But much of the mother you've described so well, describes my own mother and my grandmother! I recall days when my mother wouldn't sit down to dinner or breakfast saying that she wasn't hungry or would eat something later when in reality there was only enough for the three kids. Clothes wasn't washed on a board but a ringer washer almost as bad as a board, more dangerous anyway! But you've touched me with this write, I could envision this being published on cards and being sold at many of the tourist attractions here in the mountains, or at my favorite restaraunt Cracker Barrell...loved it!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

Rose, I was raised in a house like that. I remember standing around that stove roasting on the side nearest the stove and freezing on the side away from the stove. Thanks for my moment of escape into my past.

Hi Rose. We think alike. I love this poem. I like taking photos of old houses and barns. They are getting very hard to find. Coincidentally, I have a poem posted here at AD entitled, "Old House." I do not know if you have read it but like you, I find these buildings to evoke a great deal. Thank you. Love and blessings to you,

Regis
