The Phantom of the Opera
There was once a man,
Hideously scarred,
His life limited to
An old opera house
And the beauty he created
From his tortured soul.
He was shunned,
Misunderstood,
Even feared,
For being a monster, and
I see myself in him,
For I live my life
Limited by circumstances--
Economic, Physical,
And emotional, all--
As I spend hours alone
Creating my own interpretations
Of beauty.
I know that I am
Shunned by some,
Misunderstood by most,
Even feared by those
Who see me as different,
An imagined threat
To their staid worlds;
And like that man,
That Phantom,
What I want most
In this world
Is acceptance
And love
In spite of all those things
So many find
Objectionable, and
Even abhorrent.
Beautifully put. Honestly, what you've always strived for. You have described occasionally someone who meant a lot to you. He could have been or maybe still is, the beauty in your life. I've learned that you are far more intelligence than the average individual and not afraid to come out in your writing on many subjects in addition to your favorite, your ideal romance.
Personally, I haven't seen the Phantom of the Opera or Beauty and the Beast. Although I have seen some man, woman, relationships where the woman was very beautiful and she married a man that was quite beastly – opposites attract. And I go by the song popularized by Bobby McFerrin, Get an Ugly Woman to Marry You, it's true!
The reason I haven't seen those two movies, plays, is partly opportunity for the plays and my feeling that feel good dramas don't work out in real life very often. although they make for good drama in the arts. People who often overlook how people are judged simply by their looks instead of their quality of character.
In my life I found I could be all alone even with many others around me. Keep being you, keep pressing on and one day, when you may least expect it, the sun will shine down on you and you'll find yourself in a wide space filled with freedom and love. Your poem is gut honest and I felt it deep in my soul.
