Egyptian religion, mythology, magic etc. has long been seen as the origin point for later developments in Western and Middle-eastern cultures. This collection/sequence explores the place of scribes in both Egyptian and post-modern cultures and societies.

This 20 poem collection (part mythic re-imagining) is inspired by primordial (Old, Middle & New Kingdom) and late antique (Alexandrian and Romano) Egyptian understandings of creativity, culture and writing. It shares creative and intellectual terrain with material presented in a public talk for the Philosophy in the Library series, in August 2015. The talk and poetry collection explore the relevance for us today of ancient deities presiding over writing, teaching, healing, libraries, etc. Seshat, Thoth, Ma'at, Hermes/Mercury and Hermes Thrice magestic all feature in these poems.

Dr Ian Irvine (Hobson) is the author of two novels, a book of poetry and an acclaimed nonfiction book on chronic forms of alienation and ennui. His works have featured in various Australian national writing anthologies as well as in over 100 journals and magazines. He has co-edited over 20 writing anthologies and has taught as a creative arts educator and sometimes course coordinator since 1994. He is the founder and chief songwriter of the alt. rock band Interstitium, and was also the lead singer and co-songwriter of Australian alt rock band "Goya's Child (Original)" before his departure in 1994.
