She said, "I loved you
for a little white,"
And there were tears in her eyes
as she smiled.
"I'm leaving now,
I have to go."
I thought, doesn't she know
I still love her so?
But I could see
she had made up her mind.
We had run out of time,
and she was no longer mine.
I looked into her eyes
and held her hand.
I didn't want to admit it,
but I really did understand.
She was so lovely,
sitting there.
"I'll let you go," I said.
"and I won't interfere."
Because I knew
she had madeup her mind.
We had run out of time,
and she was no longer mine.
"Can I kiss you
just one last time?"
She nodded slightly
as she might have before
in some other time.
As I leaned forward,
she turned aside.
I kissed her cheek
and almost cried.
I knew
she had made up her mind.
We had run out of time,
and she was no longer mine.
I heard the closing of the door
as I walked away.
There was nothinfg more I could do
and nothing left to say.
Long before today
she had stopped loving me,
But I had to hear it from her
before I could really see.
Now I could finally accept
what I already knew in my mind.
We just ran out of time,
and she was no longer mine.
Just a memory at the end of my short and stormy second marriage.
