it is night they arrive home with his key he opens the front door they put the groceries on the dining table near the kitchen then he goes to the door of a dark bedroom to check if the answering machine light is blinking it isn’t he is relieved sometimes no news is good news every parent’s nightmare: a blinking light on the machine the panicky voice of an offspring announcing an accident a tragedy too close for oh, please God spare one more of Your sheep from such a horror are his thoughts a parent sheep: me.

It is scary when our children are out! You are right it is every parent's fear that they will get the call! My children are twenty seven and twenty three and I still find myself calling to make sure they are okay if I hear of an accident! I always thought my mom was a worry wort for doing the very same thing...now I'm making the calls, and she still calls each of her three when she hears of an accident where she thinks we might be...her oldest is 49 and I'm the baby at 44...Oh no! I guess I've turned into my mom...I couldn't imagine anyone I would rather be like...a great write my friend that describes what all parents have gone through, if they haven't they will! Powerful imagery...

Randall, I recall when my children were younger, how I too agonized at the answering machine's blinking light. It ws a gut wrenching experience each time. Find your peace and relax. God watches too. JMW

So many parents - and grandparents - will connect with this poem, Randall. Always that gray-thought that lingers in the mind...because of love and caring...a child forever remains 'their child'.
