Once upon a time long ago,
my main concern in life was me,
my career, and my freedom, independence and self -
it consumed my very existence.
You slipped in so unexpectedly,
tearing up my plans and throwing them to the winds.
You took over,
and in spite of everything I swore I'd never do,
made me rearrange my life - self - whole being
to make room for you.
You unselfconsciously demanded my all,
my time, my energy, my abilities,
and expected total love, unconditionally -
no matter what you did.
And did I resent this seemingly chauvinistic attitude?
Did I despair at what I may have lost of myself by letting you into my life?
No! Never!
Not even when you demanded my presence
at 6 o'clock on Saturday morning
just to share cartoons.
I love you my precious son.
