You struck the match
held it in your fingers
as you watched it burn down
knowing that soon
you'd be scorched too
and not caring.

You held your breath
counting silently
as you changed your mood
wondering when
the fog would lift
and you could smile.

You walked away
writing your goodbye
as you did what you needed
leaving behind
those tender words
of a true friend.
