I was the thorn in your flesh
as you were the spear in my side.
You ravaged my body, then left me for dead.
You used me then cast me aside.

I: having watched my love die.
You: pouring out venomous blame.
You mocked me and told me my love was a lie,
and I the soul source of your shame,

I had laid down next to him --
Something you could not comprehend.
My own death was only a matter of when,
carried as a leaf on the wind.

Ever the thorn in your side;
I lay me down at last to cry.
I’ve carried your spear in my flesh through all time;
two thousand long years now gone by.

This never my cross to bear,
yet I bore it on oceans wide
along with his pure heart that I buried deep
until he rose up from inside

And saw, looking through my eyes,
your beautiful face like those feet
that carried threads of his truth. Through his eyes,
I saw and knew it was you, knew

You would do what you would do
to remember that other life.
But it has passed. I am here waiting for you
to do what once I could not do:

To love you, to love you, then
to love you again, make it real,
Let it be me to show you where we have been
and see you set at last free with love —

Like love you locked out of life.
Let it be you who touches me
in that place he came back to make way again
for a whole new place to begin.

We: unleashed, unchained, unbound,
see eye to eye, stand side by side.
Once lost to ourselves, we are free to be found.
You are no spear; I am no thorn.

From ancient fear, Love has come,
and he is laughing once again —
Jesus, whose love we both adored, holy one
Rabboni, master, teacher, Lord.

He calls to us through the years,
with blinding light to restore sight.
May all who love long and listen with their ears
be freed from endless reign of tears,

May you see with emerald eyes
be filled with wonder and surprise.
See clearly through all the clouded, foggy lies
and come to love through long, dark night.

With you, my life has been changed.
He tells me that he loves me, yet
from
some new form, with so much now rearranged.
You: beautiful gift he gave me.

My Judas, Peter, and Paul --
denied, life stolen, heart broken  --
you played so flawlessly the parts of them all.
a simple exchange in the end.

Betrayed with a stolen kiss.
I stand silent this night knowing
I was made three: first beauty, glorious bliss,
then beast, your fast fury and feast,

You made me lover and foe,
seduced me then turned to stalk me,
marked me as the single lost sheep who must go.
Third I: the one who loves you still --

Our end yet to be revealed.

a truly excellent write of epic proportions. As Jesus said to his father looking up into the sky towards the heavens..."forgive them for they know not what they do"

love encapsulates a bounty of idea, emotion and varied experience and no one else has the capacity to comprehend what they simply cannot understand ...

good work, Dawn ... i enjoyed it variety and potential outcome ...

I agree with everything Jerry said because I cannot comprehend anyone going through what this poem suggests. Unless they are somehow easily swayed by the whims of something they perceive as love, but isn't.

Damn! What a roller coaster ride I just took with you. I'll never write another poem of love dashed, kicked, and crumpled that I don't think of this gem. My head was reeling and confused and ecstatic and confused, and . . . The last line almost seized my heart like it was inside a huge gripping fist. Whoaaaaaaa!

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
