Because you remember falling you have forgotten that to rise takes only reconnection with the heart's emerald eyes. Mine should like to see you before they close, before flying blind becomes the only legacy.

Two seconds—one to look me in the eyes and cease
endless explanation, another to speak your peace,
give up wholly holy war and take just a moment to recall,
Love.

Not two minutes and an elevator speech
delivered perfectly that would surely breach
your sacred promise and put me to sleep in time.

Not twenty minutes of some refined presentation
that would fall short of your own expectation
and be worlds away from the absence of mine.

Not two months of batting around potentialities
while so much more slips away and realities
fade quickly as does the light of day.

Not twenty years of circuitous sailing on the seas
and rising from the shipwrecks only to set sail again
and play I wish I might I wish I may.

Not two millennia of turning your back on me
or failing to show, to say, to shine, to stand, to see
how you will only move forward when you fall
in love.

Each stanza mirrors a different human avoidance: justification, performance, overthinking, habit, and spiritual neglect. The final word, “Love,” completes the circle begun in the opening stanza, like a bell rung twice once at awakening, once at surrender.

He sounds hard to get nailed down to anything positive.
