beneath the surface...dreams

Say hello to the sidewalk
shake hands with the stars
cementing charisma
with Max Factor’s scars.
Make up in the movies
and fight in your life
divorced from the real world
in
Hollywood’s strife.
Set sail on a greyhound
of paramount dreams
down highways unknown
to the crème de la cream.
With history of boulevard
fortune foretold
of celluloid faces
who did fit the mold.
A star only shone
with the flash of a bulb
in light of the trades
a life story is told.
Premieres of an era
no longer we see
‘neath gables and Grauman’s
and what used to be.
Yet bombshells still capture
the hearts of all men
in hopes that one
Harlow
make comeback again.
The system no longer
where once was a roar
a lion now sleeps
with the wind gone its core.
Romantics of yesteryear
immortal fair
still pick at all hopes
of a castle in air.
Marbled the footprint
of all stages doors
forever make sunsets
on cutting room floors.
A concrete remembrance
for those we have known
in
Hollywood’s memory
of stars cast in stone.

Nostalgic, paying homage to a classier, more real and down to Earth time, and a bit sad. Beautiful. The Lindseys and Angelinas will never measure up to the Ritas, Graces, Audreys, and Kates. I can appreciate this one not just for the awesome way it is penned, but also for the sentiment. Thanks for sharing this.

A rich and bygone era..where celebrity was earnt..and the results were there for us all to enjoy. This is a richly written and nostalgic piece which reminds us of what has been lost..and what we have in its place (in my humble opinion) cannot start to compare in style, content and glamour. Love, Diana.

quite a creation here John, i can't help it that i miss Bonanza, the big valley and all the great stars in the shows, to mention a few. Quite a few of my morals I got from shows like the Lone Ranger. I use to hate the bad guys who hid behind rocks to shoot the good guys in the back. Even Clayton Moore who played the Lone Ranger stated that, "HIS ROLE IN THE SHOW HELPED SHAPE HIS LIFE FOR THE BETTER."

Some good does come from good old Jolly Wood

Strong rhymes for a softer time--no brakes for this broken age--stone casts of the great counterparts of today's stars at whom I sure would like to cast a few stones? Oops, I'm sorry... Didn't mean to get mean... And since when did being a professional pretender become a quallifier for political activism?-- or is it all about the money? Sorry again... --Charlie

Excellent write John
Yes the greats are all gone
all the remain are the baffoons of LA La Land
Trying to Emulate the greats of yesteryears
Peace be with you

A rich verbal imagery of Hollywood, and some of the talent of bygone eras! Being from California originally, and walking about those brass monuments of old and new, I was there again, looking afoot for heroes of the past, some forgotten but all immortalized in stone. I'd like to see more like this, perhaps a tribute to those who've left a permanent mark in front of Mann's Chinese Theatre, or to those endless hours of fact and fantasy on acetate plastic strips in a film warehouse. I read this, and I think again, not so much of the Tom Cruise's or the Steven Segal's, but the greats like Cary Grant, Errol Flynn and Rita Hayward...when Hollywood had REAL talent walking about those seedy streets.

Very clever! It is amazing how you keep the rhymes flowing without ever disturbing your story-line - tha's control! (or editing) Love this - tinged with sad nostalgia outlined in the hard-stone of reality; yet, I'm one lover of those old Hollywood romantics now long gone!

Candid and crisp writing, John, and yet flows with an unforced lyricism also. Penetrating eye and yet one that also "treads softly on our dreams" - an honest realist with a sensitive heart! Thanks for your visit to my pages today. Pleased to meet you! :)) Kate x

I too found myself strolling down memory lane while reading this. I did not grow up with movies as the nearest theater was some distance away. i remember when I discovered them and the 'leading men and starlets'... I wish we could go back to those days of simple fare. There are those who we cast in stone and immortalize in memory. Fantastic work here...

The best movies are the ones with the previous generation of stars. They just don't make movies worth paying money for, for the most part. Yet, I can hardly wait to go see the "Bucket List" - with Jack Nichelson and Morgan Freeman. At least they were immortalized in stone.

God bless you. Kathy

They sure don't make movies like they used to; all it is nowadays is sex, sex, and more sex! That or crude language or suggestions or violence! NASty movies nowadays; give me the old Disney Classics or the classics like The Wizard of Oz! Very well penned; bravo!

Man, you have a good'n heah . . . That's southern for . . . Well you know . . . Hollywood . . . As mischievous as it used to be back in "the day," I do believe the modern to the crème de la crumb has outdid the Fatty Arbuckle's, et al . . . Still, the glamour is still shining, just not so bright as it once did, especially since the people who tell these wonderful people who say such witty thing what, and how, to day them have gone on strike. Another Harlow? They are dying by the bushels . . . And no one, I mean no one, is ready for their close-up . . . Hellofapoem . . .

Terrific words of the Hollywood Scene. Many a starlette has picked their destiny and so many found a fatal fate rather than the screen. We all have seen the news and the tragedies of Hollywood. You told the story in a wonderful and sad truth.
It's a wrap!

Susan
