He was headed down to Jericho
With possessions that were a heavy load
The road was extremely treacherous
So he walked by the side of the road.
Robbers appeared as they often did
as he rested and his progress slowed
when they left he laid nearly lifeless
in a ditch at the side of the road.
A religious professional saw
Where the blood from his body flowed
But he had a busy schedule
And avoided that side of the road.
Another church worker came that way
Thinking of the goodness he owed
To show God how much he loved Him
And passed by the far side of the road.
An outcast of the church saw the man
Wearing home-made clothes he had sewed
And, although his income was meager
He knelt down at the side of the road.
He tended the wounds of the victim
with compassion which outwardly showed
and he treated that suffering human
right there at the side of the road.
He transported him on his donkey
Which, for income, he nearly had sold
And he took him to an innkeeper
Who’s inn was at the side of a road.
He paid in advance for room and board
And everything else that he owed
So the man could heal in a nice bed
Instead of the side of the road.
A neighbor is someone who sees a need
And because of a generous code
Does all he can to help rich or poor
Who lie by the side of life’s road.
Wow...this speaks volumes, larry. This is a poem I'll always remember. I've always been an advocate for the downtrodden, I have compassion for people. If I saw anyone on the side of the road I'd help. By the grace of God go I. What if it were you laying there? Anyone who could pass him by is beyond me. Outstanding poem that makes people think! What would Jesus do?
