A Wee Little Man

a poem getting inside the head of Zacchaeus

 

I’ve been a short person
since I was a small boy.
The bullies tormented me
and it filled them with joy.
 
They taunted me, “Stand up Zac!”
and patted on my head.
Their teasing made them feel big
but I wished that I was dead.
 
I swore I’d get even some day
and have the final laugh
so they’d be like little ants
and me a tall giraffe.
 
I became a tax collector
and then I was in charge.
I felt I had such great power
which made me feel so large.
 
I cheated them each time I could
and grew tall with my greed
even though I got even
I hurt those in great need.
 
When Jesus passed below my tree
he asked me to come down.
I felt my great importance
displayed for all the town.
 
When I sat and ate with him
he showed a better way
to understand big and small
and helped me learn to pray.
 
I learned I was a mustard seed
which could grow to a great height
and work for God in good to all
to make things turn out right.

An object lesson about the roots of greed. Hurt begets hurt in an endless cycle until the cycle is finally broked by God himself. I hope all will find their cycle broken in the end Larry. Bob

I normally don't like religious poetry, but I found this one to be quite enjoyable. There have been many short people in history who have overcome their shortness to become great, while still bothered by their ruthlessness in getting where they got. Two people come to mind immediately, Napoleon Bonaparte and Richard Nixon.

We all screw up Larry. The question is weather we learn from our dark past or we just continue without seeing the light?
Let us consider Paul when he was Saul. If God could accept him and Paul could rise above his past as Saul then there is HOPE for us ALL.
