Perched on a telephone line
the feathered king surveys his kingdom.
Invitations, regrets, congratulations,
busy syllables tumble
through the grasp of his claws.
Everyday gossip, frantic reminders,
happy birthdays, angry words,
it’s all the same to him.
The hunter’s wings unfold
as businesses spit out urgent messages
and lovers whisper their private words.
His shadow scythes across the meadow;
animals dodge and shriek.
He glides a current of silence
back to the taut humming of his throne.
A voice dangles limp from his talons;
the conversation goes on.

I like this poem for all of its poetic magnificence.
"...a voice dangles limp from his talons..." sound like the words of many good Americans dangling limp from the ears of every GOP.
But to the hunter...that's just gibberish noise.
This is a TEN! I really enjoyed this AND I will never quite look at "my birds on a wire" again in the same way. I have quite a few in front of my house each morning and evening - Though no hawk, there's an Osprey nest in the neighborhood, but I just don't have the poetic gift yet you do to put it in such "ringing" images. This is such a gem, it's worth a ton of other poetry on this site! ...the first 5 lines alone spell "MasterPiece"!

PS: I just noticed this is from "Hanging Man..." Is that so? So, there, I wouldn't have thought that. It shows, that people here just haven't had a chance to get to know just how good that book may be. WHEN I do get less strapped for cash I will have to buy it if this poem is in there...I just sold on this imagery!

Creative poem at its best! I could feel the vibrations tingling up my fingers and toes as if I were the hawk absorbing through the lines. Well Done! Deborah
