I never heard birds so vividly as when I woke up one morning in Guatemala and went out on the deck of my hotel to the cacophony of the early-morning activity of birds I had never heard before and probably never will hear again. Still, I can hear the sparrows that constantly flock around the water and birdseed we put out, as well as the unmistakable sound of mourning doves and the delightful morning charades by the talented mockingbird.
