A lucid dream
too calm acceptance of a loss that should have quaked me…
(gentle snores from the other side of the bed)
my feet entwine with his…
the dream again…
and this time there’s a ship, and we are sinking
all lines thrown out to me—to me, and not to him,
I swing to safety, a heartful of swelling relief,
dawning awareness that he’s not there…
(He sighs and turns over)
my feet move up his calf…
the dream again…
and this time there’s this mirror above my piano
and I can only see me, but he’s behind me.
In my dream, there are no words, only music,
and I play my song for him,
half finished, half harmonious, halfway beautiful
(he moans and rolls my way again)
My fingers search for his…
the dream again…
and this time he’s a ghost,
entwining his fingers with my own
and such music I have never heard
so full, so perfect, so hauntingly lovely…
silence—too silent—
Breathe! I think, just Breathe!
(he snorts, gasps, and coughs a little, then back to snoring again)
Song forgotten, my fingers release his
fingers under my own chin,
I lay off dreaming, and sleep
