You don't know the battles in life that others had faced until they tell you...
After my brother's death last year, fate led me back to be reconnected with my Third Auntie (my dad's third sister).
I was so overwhelmed with joy when I reconnected with her. I have not seen Third Auntie in decades. The last time I saw her was in the early 2000s when she came over to Canada to throw herself a birthday party and invited my husband and me to go to the restaurant. We had no idea it was her birthday and did not even bring a gift. Prior to that, the last time I saw her was when I was a child in Hong Kong. She came home from Japan and brought along with her some toys for us all to play. I am assuming Third Uncle must have been already making a lot of money.
Third Auntie is a kind and generous woman. When she heard I was struck with COVID and pneumonia, she offered to send me some money. I was so happy to hear from her, not because my Third Auntie wanted to send me money, but the fact that she is the ONLY remaining auntie who is still alive on my dad's side of the family and I was able to reconnect with her. She is 97 years old already.
I had often thought my Third Auntie had led a good life because my Third Uncle (her husband) was a famous author who wrote "How To Invest In Real Estate Books" and he was so rich and famous. But to my surprise, she said because he was Japanese, my grandparents had disapproved of their marriage. She left home to marry her Japanese husband without any dowries or any money.
They were very poor at the beginning of their marriage, but she worked several jobs, and would often have only 3 hours of sleep. My eyes became watery when I heard how she and her husband struggled. I never knew she and Third Uncle had such a hard life.
After Third Uncle's books made it to the world. His "How to" books were followed by many readers, and he eventually got the fame and fortune that he worked for. Today, his companies are spread in several countries around the world. I am so happy for my Third Auntie.
I told her my husband and I have had some hard times too in life, but we just solved the problems the best way we could, and she told me from now on any time I have a financial problem I can let her know and she will send me some money.
Being on my own for the past several years, I am so happy that Third Auntie still remembers me and reconnects with me.

What a wonderful story! But concerning her age, keep in touch with her often. She may not have long to live and you need to keep her thinking of you and your extended family as a comfort for her as age isolates her from her earlier life and lost friends, relatives, like her sisters and her husband.
I lost my last aunt about two months ago. She was 97 and the wife of my dad's brother who lived to 102. I saw them both when a fellow author, Scott Zachary, drove me to College Station to see them about five years ago. I felt bad I hadn't called, but the last time I did, I got her daughter, my cousin told me that she was suffering from dementia

Thank you, Jane!!! I am so happy to have reconnected with my Auntie!! She is so sweet. While talking on the phone with her she spoke fondly of my Daddy, and she spoke to me like I was so valuable. She made me feel good about myself.
