As if by Magic...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Our memories can at times be imprecise or biased, especially as we age. But there are exceptions. Some memories remain as vividly lucid now as they were when they were experienced. For me… there was a pivotal summer in my late pre-teens when I began learning about voices…

Poem Artwork
It was an old evangelical church
with stained stonework,
mossy shingles, and
pews that needed
refinishing…
In the back,
near the alley,
a creaky wooden
staircase wound up
the bell-tower to a
cobwebby room
crammed
with past sins
and old furniture…
Pretending to be one
of the Hardy boys that week,
I sleuthed every nook and cranny
looking for keys, and secret passages,
or any other kinda cool stuff I could stash
in a cigar box and pretend was a treasure…
.
It was also a
time when I began
learning about voices
(tones, inflections, spirit)
mostly sitting on an old
bench under maples,
alive with sparrows,
observing, and
listening to
people
walking past
with groceries,
returning from work,
or to meet up with friends…
And some of the worst voices
were the shit-faced drunks
tottering outside
a seedy pothouse,
puking and cursing, and
all of them utterly oblivious to
the greeter smiling from the stoop
handing out bulletins for Sunday service…
.
Cattycorner, across the street,
a strident street vendor was hawking
cigarettes and cheap souvenirs to passersby
and cars entering the expressway…
.
And that muttering
old woman at the
bus stop across the
street thumbing through
a dog-eared magazine she’d
pulled from the trash. With
skittish eyes darting (this
way and that way)
she would sneak
swigs from a bottle
in a brown bag and then
curse at the top of her lungs…
.
And there was one voice
(disdainful and arrogant)
that echoes in me still,
the
highfalutin
new music director,
(a once palmy recording artist)
fast losing patience with what he was
referring to as ‘harmonic inconsistencies,’
.
“Your intonation is off,” he barked
.
“What do you want,” a woman quetched
.
“Just sing your notes, that’s what I want,” he returned
.
“I’m here to help the church, not please you,” she spit back
.
“That’s good because you’re not,” he countered angrily
.
“Fine! I’m leaving! Find somebody else!”
.
And from an open window
on the second floor,
I remember Pastor
grumbling
to someone
about squeaking pews,
walls in need of paint, his growing
discontent with the new music director,
pitiful tithing, an operational budget in need
of a miracle, and a troubling trend of
gossip at Saturday functions…
.
And at the height of his rant,
.
As if by magic, a
swarm of sparrows suddenly
began flitting near the same window,
and all of them were singing
in harmony, without
budgets, directors
conceit or
controversy, and
when he heard them,
Pastor stopped complaining, and
after hanging up, he remained near the
window listening to something I felt certain
he had never known before in this old church…

What a lovely ending that was, while I am enchanted and a child once more!

Wow, this is a vivid memory! I remember an old church too but mine was in a field in the country. Well penned and really quite fascinating, Richard. Thank God for the beauty of his world.

THANK GOD FOR NATURE(GOD'S MAGIC), RICHARD. I DON'T CARE HOW IT COMES BUT GOD'S PLAN TO REACH US THROUGH IT, ANY WAY HE CAN, IS ALWAYS CARRIED OUT, IF WE ARE OPEN TO IT. WHETHER IN BIRDS CHIRPING OR A FRAGRANCE IN THE WIND OR A GLIMPSE OF A SIMPLE FLOWER OR MAJESTIC SCENE...HE LIFTS US UP AND GIVES US JUST WHAT WE NEED IN THAT MOMENT. I MEAN, HE PREACHES AN ENTIRE SERMON IN AN INSTANT, WHEREBY WE, LIKE THAT PREACHER, CAN'T DO ANYTHING BUT...LISTEN. BEAUTIFUL! IT IS NO WONDER YOU REMEMBERED THE SCENE...IT WAS A BUILDING STONE TO YOUR FAITH THAT YOU HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN. I THINK GOD IS DEFINITELY SPEAKING TO ME TODAY...I JUST GOT THROUGH READING, 'LILAC AND RAIN' BY DIANA WILES. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH... HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You've penned a marvelous picture of an often ignored presence of nature at its most innocent and melodious. Perfection here in your choice of images to embellish the chaos that can ensue when surroundings are ignored and often abused. Such a perfect ending. One of your best.

Such a strong message. And you probably learned more from these experiences than you did while listening to the best intentions of the Pastor, spouting his heavenly messages with the echoes of his earthly limitations coming through loud and clear. That is not a criticism, just an observation that tends to repeat and repeat. Well written, as usual.

I could relate to this "story" in an intimate way, having sung solo in the local church when I was a youth. You brought it all back to life in recounting your own childhood experiences in such a meaningful manner.

Your memory really was sharp with this one! As I read, you made me feel like I was there, following your exploration of the musty old church and you're listening to the voices all around that made you want to go into music in the first place.

Sparrows for inspiration! I never could make sense of all their twittering.
