On Open Wings...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Hawks do not recognize human faces the way we do, they recognize us through learned associations. They perceive us as fast moving, and often erratic in movement and behavior, all of which can trigger a predatory focus, especially during nesting season. A human to a hawk is a complex visual target – a constant merging of motion, color, and form. ‘On Open Wings’, purposes to compare the differences between the unfettered simplicity of a hawks existence, with the not so subtle (more often than not destructive) behavior of human beings. Poetiprose.

Poem Artwork
Observing humanity through the eyes of a Hawk.
.
Don’t misunderstand me,
public opinion has little effect
on my frame-of-mind. Especially
the opinions and bitter words
disgorged by nosy parkers,
tattletales, inebriates,
and the philistines
who exacerbate
the kinds of
behaviors
designed to malign,
irritate and denigrate others…
.
I have learned to fly
high to see, not to be seen,
to pursue only what sustains me,
and in so doing I can reciprocate in like
manner to complete a cycle written into the
molecules of how I was created,
.
On Open Wings,
my choices lift me higher,
up where the sun spills golden,
where the spirit of adventure sings,
and where genuine strength dwells
in its ability to adapt…
.
I do not follow trends; I forge new paths…
.
Having flown the far-lands
in search of something lasting,
seeking precious treasures in
lassitudes shifting sands,
overcoming each day,
as natural curiosity
discovers new views;
I, Hawk, see you
judging others
with the
same precipitous eyes
you use to hunt, but rarely do
you ever defeat your dysfunctions,
you defend them, you empower them,
and then use them against others…
.
you may have a voice
but it is small and hollow,
you may have a wonderfully
and fearfully made body, but too
often it gets bogged down with fear,
you may have a mind
that is capable of great things, but
it is clouded too much by ego and hatred…
.
My cry is not of anger, but of freedom,
for in the stillness of flight, I find peace…
.
I will admit
that your way
is not a highway to
be journeyed lightly,
that your way
is not an example
to be followed politely,
that your way does
not echo life and hope.
As a matter of fact, your way
leaves us clawing up cliffs in despair
seeking abandoned eggs in small crevices.
Not fanciful or imaginative,…. your way
perverts life's natural flow, and lessens
prospect, while tumefying the ego…
.
I fly high, I see far, and I strike
only when the moment is right…
.
It is a test of endurance getting here,
one that challenges the mind and body.
Soaring above & along jagged granite
ramparts, which have seen many
centuries pass before,
I, Hawk, hunt only
for what sustains me.
I fly not just to fly, but to fly
with purpose and vision, to overcome
obstacles, trusting the journey,
and how I am led….
Up here,
the winds blow freely,
and when the heart opens
to potential, within those moments
where hunger and survival join hands,
I fly freely, without hatred, or constraint.

FROM THIS READING A QUESTION AROSE; YOUR WORK SEEMS TO INDICATE THAT ALL 'HAWKS' ARE WISE, WITH TAILORED OBSERVATIONS AND JUDGEMENTS. HOWEVER...IS IT POSSIBLE THAT, LIKE HUMANS, THEY ARE NOT 'ALL' PERFECT OR FILLED WITH AN AVIAN PURPOSE THAT IS TRANQUIL? BUT DO INHABIT CERTAIN NATURAL 'INWARD INCLINATIONS' THAT CAN BE, WITHOUT PROVOCATION, QUITE NEGATIVE AND OPPOSITE TO FLYING ON OPEN WINGS AND CALMLY WATCHING...US, AS THEY SURVIVE? I ENJOYED THIS WORK SO MUCH, RICHARD, AND THOUGH I REALLY DO 'GET IT'...THE PERSPECTIVE IS AWESOME AND, AS YOU CAN SEE HAS PROVOKED AND 'STIRRED-UP' MY IMAGINATION TO OVER-FLOWING, INDEED. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

The hawk, the coyote, the bear ... the rat ... and other species release their aggression for reasons of survival or fear or other reasons made necessary by mother nature. They do not argue with the world, they simple live in it with whatever course has been given to them.

Humans will never truly soar like a hawk or stampede like the buffalo because because we can't seem to understand or separate the blessings of our knowledge from obsession with our greed. Fear has its purpose ... greed does not.

I'd surely wouldn't mind soaring like a hawk. I surely wouldn't mind seeing the world as a hawk sees it.

Enjoy reading. Enjoyed imagining.

Rather long but a certainly well thought out comparison between how you view things and how a hawk does it–primarily for food.

It is always best to be above the crowd and not down among it, picking up bad vibes and going along with bad actions.

Unfortunately, the hawk often goes after young, as well as the disabled and diseased. Otherwise, less likely to escape not only its gaze, but its talons. I haven't seen a hawk attack a human the way that humans attack other humans.

This piece clearly lay out through the hawk eyes of, yes, the hawk (a first person narration) how the hawk’s disciplined, purposeful existence exposes the restless, self‑wounding tendencies of human behavior. The voice you give the hawk is powerful: calm, observant, unflinching. Its critique isn’t cruel; it’s truthful. And the imagery of flight — rising, adapting, seeing farther — becomes a beautiful counterpoint to the heaviness you ascribe to us. A striking, creative work full of insight.
