A Gradual Decline…

PORTRAYAL 72. For the alcoholic man struggling alone on the boulevard.

Sunday, June 28, 2026

Poem Artwork
Notice how a clock without hands
quietly hums in the attic, measuring
the weight of unspoken vows,
.
or down a dark alleys throat,
how shadows swap names, and
wind folds paper airplanes from silence,
.
notice how a dancer dancing barefoot on the edge
of a shadow catches echoes before they are born,

or how a player strumming a stringless guitar
searches the air for melodies that never existed. So
.
a soused man lingers
Between living and deaths door
Hoping for mercy
.
But…
.
Who will offer it?
Who even cares anymore
About one who has
Settled into a mold of
Desiccated snobbery,
.
For years reactive
Now hollow and quick to judge,
Pride seeks redemption
.
Once inspired, now
A dry tussock of dead grass,
He examples how
A snobby inkhorn thinker
Denigrates others with ease
.
An empty bottle
Keeps a ghostly hollow shape,
Standing in mourning;
Life has taken your thirst, and
Left silence you could not live….

This series will also address certain of the actors, artists, musicians, composers, and writers I worked with in college, or professionally, that were influential (in one way or another) in shaping the man I am today.     A NEW RACE OF HuMANS

THIS ONE REALLY 'HITS HOME'. ALL ALCOHOLICS ARE NOT ON THE STREETS. AND YOU ARE SO RIGHT... IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ENJOYMENT. IT GRADUALLY BECOMES A NEED FOR ALCOHOL THAT IS GREATER THAN A NEED TO 'LOOK-UP' AND LIVE. SOME HAVE THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE BUT ONLY GOD CAN GIVE THEM THE STRENGTH TO REACH FOR IT. AND...HE WAITS... FOR THEM TO REALIZE THIS. SUCH A FINE WORK, RICHARD...THAT SKETCHES A CONDITION THAT IS SO TERRIBLY, TERRIBLY... SAD. THE VERY BEST ONE CAN DO IS...KEEP THEM IN PRAYER. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You have the right words for those who have found their lives have reached into the bottom of an empty bottle.

In my time in the part of town considered bad only because it was poor, I have seen the one you describe living day-to-day on a bottle of wine for much longer than anyone would ever think.

Richard ... If one is familiar with sharing space with souls whose identity and strength have been lost to addiction whether within one's own home or city/town, your poem will penetrate both emotion and intellect. I truly cannot express in words how excellently you have captured the tragedy of a dark and hopeless path that it still lit with the flame of mercy.

Beautifully written ... images that speak volumes ...

Thank you ...

This seems to be a life that has dimmed by degrees rather than any specific catastrophe. The surreal images—the clock without hands, the dancer catching unborn echoes, the guitar searching for melodies that never were—create a haunting prelude to the man on the boulevard, whose decline is not just physical but spiritual, a hollowing-out of once-living person with desire and convictions. The empty bottle “standing in mourning” is a devastating image; as if it too grieves for what he has lost. A stark portrayed of a man who has become a ghost inside his own life portrayed with clarity and sorrow.
