Like Wildflowers and Weeds…

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Each persons struggles are rarely the result of a single factor. More often than not, they are a combination of poor coping choices, and overpowering circumstances that can grind down an individuals well-being. Recognizing this interplay could be the first step towards preventing long-term harm, and fostering healing, especially for those who struggle with themselves, and with those around them. Poem Artwork
So it was for them,
and for countless others,
as they grew and struggled
in a soulless-system, seeking-out
their identities, their paths, their purpose,
their successes, as captivating circumstance
cajoled (each of them) with a fool’s panacea.
People much like cold calderas, once bold
and forceful, now sadly subject to the
chronicles of yawning indifference.
.
A battered cop’s wife
beat down and oppressed,
seeks retribution in her world
of make-believe. A sister’s alcoholic
husband beats on her regularly;
it rewires her heart and mind.
Cursed by his choices,
he is sadly killed
in a head-on
collision,
leaving her and an
only son alone and unloved.
.
Years go by…
.
Ever deprived of model,
the son loses his bearings, angry,
arrogant, aggravated, he curls inward,
embraces his wounds, weed, alcohol, pills,
ends up wayward, darkened, lessened, a miscreant
seeking refuge in a Wiccan’s ramshackle garage,
where he drinks and smokes himself numb
and lines the framing with hundreds
of empty bottles he pretends
are medals….
.
These accounts
proliferate like weeds,
in every city and township
the wounded (financially solvent
or in straitened circumstances) exist in
an odd state of melancholic un-belonging,
souls seeking freedom, wings, peace,
meaning, as opposing forces
relentlessly push back
with impudent vigor,
ugly converting
influences,
staunch
unbending
unwavering
deceptive assuredness
vomiting multiple sides of
similar theories while being simultaneously
caught betwixt shadows of indifference
as side by side miseries annihilate
meaningful purpose…
.
And they persist
like wildflowers and weeds,
a pandemic of fraught souls
struggling,
surviving alone,
unloved in a soulless system,
scorned, segregated, separated
alone dreamers dreaming dreams
of beautiful things that remain
[for them] unrealized …
.

ABSOLUTELY, NOTHING...JUST HAPPENS. AND GOD, THOUGH IT
MAY NOT ALWAYS SEEM LIKE IT...IS EVER IN CHARGE. IS GOD ALWAYS THE ANSWER TO...WILD FLOWERS AND WEEDS... PROBLEMS...? YES, HE IS. I THINK SOMETIMES WE FORGET WHY WE EXIST ON THIS PLANET. THERE IS ONLY ONE PURPOSE...TO GET HOME. ALL OUR ROADS(FIELDS) ARE DIFFERENT. THAT'S WHY WE WHO KNOW THE WORD...CONTINUOUSLY REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR THE UNSAVED ALL OVER THE WORLD, THAT...EVEN UP UNTIL THEIR VERY LAST MOMENTS BEFORE THEIR VERY LAST BREATH IS EXPELLED...THE LOST WILL ACCEPT CHRIST AS THEIR PERSONAL SAVIOR, FOR WHO KNOWS WHAT HAPPENS IN THOSE MOMENTS, RICHARD? WHO KNOWS WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN(AS MY DAD USED TO SAY)...THE STIRRUP AND THE SOD? FOR ME, THIS OLD CLICHE' ALWAYS STANDS; WHEN WE GET TO HEAVEN...WE ARE GOING TO BE VERY SURPRISED AND THOSE THAT MADE IT AND EVEN MORE SURPRISED AT THOSE THAT DIDN'T. AMEN. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS FINE WORK, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

As you know I love my weeds, and herbs too. My favored one right now is mint ice-tea. This poem is far more serious though. It’s amazing how people can crush another soul and how hard it can be to get out of their way. Hope all is well with you.

At any interval in each of our lives we reside among the wildflowers, and its no mean features pulling away before we become entangled by those weeds that entwine us.
To me this describes our struggles with poignant precision.
Excellent Richard.

Your examples are striking and make us think. And the analogy with the plant family where there seem to be wildflowers and weeds. Yet the weeds tend to be the powerful ones in underpinning ecosystems that we don't fully understand yet.

I've often thought that if we could stop thinking about human survival of the fittest and find a way to give every person opportunity with the talent that they had, innately, wouldn't we be better off?

The natural survival of the fittest died when civilization came and no longer really operates.

You witness rather than judge the quiet devastations people carry with clarity. What struck me most is how you hold both the fragility and the endurance of these lives at once, the way people bend, break, and still somehow persist, “like wildflowers and weeds,” pushing up through whatever barren ground they’ve been given. Some valuable insights here worth holding on to.

BTW, the sketch is perfect. Yes, your observations are not only valid and important to remind everyone of, but I think they also serve to give solace to those of us that have not found ourselves in these impoverished and as you say, souless surrounding. Your sense of sadness in this peace is steller without beating up subjects as is so often the case in imaginary TV and motionspicture depictions. I was particularly imporessed with the word flow that reserved finding further fault in the predicaments cited. Yes, we all (those who don't shun the less than perfect life we've lived) have a sense of empathy and although we're not expected to understand fully all the realities of such persons in your work here, we are definitely left giving concern to our own actions of empathy and efforts to understand without forming judgement. Thank you for taking the time to take your talent through the weeds and wildflowers with such clarity and purpose in sharing. Thank you.
