In Nature’s Design…

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Haibun Poetry. 8000 feet (and above) the mountains are alive with Red Firs, Quaking Aspen, Whitebark Pines, Subalpine Firs, American Cranberry, Lilac, Potentilla, Blue Flax, Alpine Aster, Blue Fescue, Ravina grass, and a remarkable variety of moss-laden boulders. Interspersed in the high crags; ancient Bristlecone Pines remain at guard like primeval warriors. The beauty of the Alpestrine forest is raw and unfiltered, a place where the most breathtaking views come with the greatest challenges, and where the hikers personal experience is both awe-inspiring and humbling. For Michele.

Poem Artwork
.
As a testament
Fixed between earth and heaven
Trees stood motionless
.
Of boldness and majesty they exalt, bending and swaying at times with invisible winds, as a portend of spectacle, colors of imagery in bold and passive strokes, and all the while, in perfect harmony, the sun, moon, and stars, and all of nature’s abundant wonders, extol the unseen Creator.
.
In all creation
A proclamation of His
Handiwork is seen
.
Sunlight purges dark uncertainties. From a sweeping burst of showers, cleansed mountain air revives us. Raindrops drip quietly from the foliage. Preceding us, a flock of small birds chirp, flutter, and flit. Had they been sent to lead us into the wonders we sought? Around us, the side hills, and alluvial deposits, are dappled with snow and the soft textures of lady’s slipper, yellow-star-thistle, and the recently endangered Bolander’s clover.
.
In myriad shades,
Nature’s palette of colors
Are perfectly brushed
.
Lake Mamie seems a translucent cyan jewel. A sense of magnificence washes through us. Pure air heightens our discernment. Life’s complexities are reduced to fine silica as we come to behold (with spiritual eyes) how all the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; and unto the place where all the rivers begin, that is where they return to once again.
.
In natures design
All cycles of life and death
Remain inherent

FOR ME, THIS SUCCULENT WORK, IMAGED SO ARTISTICALLY, IS AN OUTSTANDING WORK WHICH IS MAGNIFICENTLY SUMMED UP IN THE LAST FOUR LINES. 'IN NATURE'S DESIGN (AND MY REVERENCE SHALL NEVER CEASE FOR OUR ONE AND ONLY... ETERNAL 'MASTER DESIGNER') ALL CYCLES OF LIFE AND DEATH REMAIN (BEAUTIFULLY) INHERENT. AMEN. A MASTERFUL WORK, RICHARD, WHICH I HAVE SAVED. THANK YOU SO MUCH. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

From your poem I can imagine. Makes me wish I had hiked in higher altitude out west when I had the chance.

Your poem shows how natural selection has created unique plants that can live well in higher altitudes where humans do not live or visit much. Making them more pristine than lower altitudes totally changed from their wild original existence into farming and ranching.

A beautifully rendered haibun, Richard, each section layering sensory detail with spiritual resonance. The haiku interludes work like breathing marks, when the reader can pause long enough to feel the stillness, the reverence, the inherent design in all things. Your descriptions of the Bristlecones, the alpine colors, the birds leading the way evoke that rare clarity one only finds at higher elevation, where creation feels both intimate and immense at the same time. Excellent work here.
