...they can't be replaced by costly modern technology

Our minds are
the most technical
computers
storing memorable
visions
of our yesterdays

The mind opens
by a long familiar scent
of fresh baked breads
or cookies
from the wood stove
of our childhood

the mind opens
by a long familiar sound
whether the creak of a rocker
the tap of hobnails in worn shoe heels
the pop or crackle of pine wood
in pot-bellied stove

the mind opens
to the sight of daffodils and iris
bringing back your first acknowledgement
of colorful flowers of Spring
or the gold, red, and orange
of painted leaves of Autumn

the mind opens
to the taste of cocoa
taking you back long ago
to the warmth of hot chocolate
after a long day of chilling cold
playing in the snow

the mind opens
to the feel of a warm hug
reminding you of Mom or Dad
when you had your first
skinned scraped knee
that showed scary red blood

The mind opens
to a certain word or words
read in other's writings
that prompt our thoughts
to a time long passed but
seemingly just yesterday

What vision comes with the song
"It Was Only a Paper Moon", or
"Onward Christian Soldiers",
"Mona Lisa", "Time Waits for No One",
"Lara's Theme", "Danny Boy",
"Moonlight Cocktail",  "In the Mood"

What visions come to you
with the mention of
a wounded soldier
the sight of our Red White and Blue
the cloud as a sailboat
the smell of fresh rain

Oh, my yes
our minds store
memorable visions
of our yesterdays
if only we
allow the mind to open.

It is so amazing when the mind is opened up because all the worldly treasure, hopes, and dreams come alive once again and that is what makes memories so priceless...

Be always safe,
Karen

It is very true that a certain sight, sound, smell, or even touch can trigger vivid memories (flashbacks), Micke. This is a fine ode to the mind. Love and best wishes,

Regis
