If Abacus was employed
for population,
counting one-by-one,
faces clouded, nameless
shuffling into obscurity,
counters the only markers,
for all become parallel rods,
strung with movable parts,
quickly tossed aside,
hopefully remembered in
the ultimate tabulation
on the other side.
