Hyperopia

 

In science class, she argued that the scientists were wrong, And baffled us with her convictions shouted loud and strong.

I saw she was convinced that everything she said was right, Because the Bible told her so and she had seen the Light.

"How can you act so sure," I asked, "with such blind certainty?"
"I have my faith," she smiled, "and that is fact enough for me."

"That's fine," I argued, "but I'd be more cautious with my trust."
"The Lord God is all-knowing and my blind faith is a must.

"You place your trust in earthly things, I place mine up above.
"And everything He does for us, He does so out of love.

"He's the shepherd, I'm the lamb; His children are His pride,
And none can cast asunder those with God's might at their side."

I heard years later, she was stalked, and no doubt paused to pray.
I don't know if she finished, but he raped her anyway.

Her friends and family all joined hands in prayer as each one cried;
Entreating tears implored the Lord, but nonetheless — she died.

I think about her often, for she's steeped in irony:
What's close at hand we do not need a telescope to see.
