Blue sky over snow
After the blanket had been thrown,
we droveup into the hills
overlooking the valley.
Each bend of our journey bringing gasps,
as the drifts got higher
and the road narrowed
to nothing but a wall.
Abandoning the car,
we walked.
Cracking the blanket
with damp sugar footsteps.
Animal tracks, cool blue, under the sky.
Stalking their prey
in this February sigh.
Up by the bothy,
we stood
and blinked away the brightness.
Turning our heads, this way and that,
in an effort to believe
how smooth the land looked,
how tailored it was
to the field and road edges.
Tucked and pleated
into a bespoke jacket of crystal white silk.
Fragile, and cold.
Immobile, in our thoughtful dance,
We shivered.
The icy wind cutting us with its useless noise.
So, gathering our dreams with needle eyes
and silent mouths.
We slipped back into town,
along frothy brown streets.
Planning our cups
of warm sweet comfort.
Thinking of home.
Being home.
