Our choir here at On The River Apartments 8330 E. Jefferson Detroit, MI. 48214. Song for the last few years at DAA Aging, Older Michiganians Day at the state capitol, in Lansing, MI. This May 2019, they said our choir couldn't sing Gospels, hymns such as these that made America great! This is our protest poem or rebuttal!
Gospel music takes a stance, shame on you legislature, not allowing us to sing! We sill sang hymns for our liberty. Did you forget Our country, Tis of Thee, sweet land of liberty of thee we sang? Maybe you forgot the song, America The Beautiful, oh beautiful for spacious skies? Did your forget this song, God of Our fathers? Perhaps you forgot the stars, spangled banner. Oh say can you see by the dawns- early light! If to conquer we must, let God be our trust, and the stars spangled banner, in freedom yet wave, for the land of the free, and the home of the brave! Did you forget all those hymns, those Gospels song of liberty? We ride the bus to Lansing the capitol for the area on aging, Older Michiganians Day. You don't want us to sing can we pray? We sung here a few times before, you let an unbeliever close that door, some of you representatives, won't be here no more! Shame, shame, shame on you! Denying us our songs, that made America, great and help keep us free, I see you know not the meaning- of Liberty! We came to this land to worship, our God Free, we song spiritual and, and hymns of liberty! All races and ethic groups. Please never forget Frances Scott Key I quote him saying give me, liberty or give me death! Veterans past and present, before going into battle, pray and sing no matter what the song, even if it is The Battle Hymn, Of The Republic, God truth still marches on Alleluia! We are going to sing aloud today, tomorrow or wherever we may be, God is our banner, thank Jesus we are Free! ��

powerful, thought provoking poem!

I grew up listening to and singing gospel songs, what a shame they are not revered as they once were

Truly a disgrace in a country that is supposed to allow free speech and religion. As you know I'm not religious but I think of the old spirituals as some of the great music we have today that for so many years buoyed up those deep in oppression with their words of joy and freedom.

Like you wrote in this poem, many of the great songs that we consider part of the American experience have religious words in them. I don't discount that. As long as they are not used to try to entice someone to join the Christian faith above all others, it's okay with me. In fact, encouraged by me. I'm about to write a blues poem because I like the genre so much.
