“If I Would have Known”

It was, as if somehow, it were not to be
For from the blue distance no favor
There would be no rolling of the tongue
Of these sweetened words to savor

In the blurred horizon of clashes past
Lost in the maze of misconception
The lack of an understanding lies
In the immortal eye of one’s perception

If truth were known when I was young
I would have then found another hobby
And not be bound by poetic works
That were scattered about the lobby

I would have spent time collecting cards
Or in building scale model trains
And stayed away from the written word
And kept the verse from my veins

Instead the time had found me leashed
To the notebook and the writing pen
And all the years that went to waste
But I did not know that then

I could have learned a new profession
For labor to me was not absurd
But somehow I had found a preference
For the beauty of the written word

Time found me writing and translating
Echoes that were under my breath
And then to my dismay I found
That it had been all done to death

The whole world had been writing too
So I was not the only one by far
Expressing their individual thought
until the light of the morning star

With the fleeting thought of an antelope
And the flight of a thousand birds
I ask the gods for the meaning of
This curse of being in love with words

I find after all that I have ever written
Sprinkled with an adjective and a noun
That I am but a drop in the ocean
Of words that have been written down

And I will take it all to my grave
As the majority of us actually would
For we would be very lucky indeed
To find that any of it was of any good

I think that you knew in your heart of hearts that you were meant to write! Your writing is exquisitely phrased, pulled from the depth of your generous heart and all that read your posts come away from the experience knowing thay have witnessed perfection. Any good? Oh, yes.

You are very gifted.
People share from their hearts, some with more trouble than others finding the right words.
You make it look easy.

Amor Sabor, you are exceptionally gifted in writing. I am surprised to find you having doubts about your love of words.

For myself, yes, there are doubts. I am just ..... me. I love to write and often question the value, but no matter who may judge and find my work falling short, I know for Whom I write. There is no turning back.

ONE CAN NEVER IGNORE WHAT GOD HAS CALLED THEM TO BE...AND ONE WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MANY HAVE BENEFITTED, IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, FROM THE WORDS ONE HAS BEEN INSPIRED TO WRITE. I'm so glad you had a preference for writing, as we have benefited from and enjoyed your passion. Who of us can truly be original and who of us 'truly' knows 'that any of it was of any good' ... but we can hope and keep trying until the end. Beautifully written piece! ~Elizabeth

We must write our best, or words are wasted. I, too, love words too much to leave them behind.

I hope you stay 'leashed to the notebook and the writing pen' Amor,
for notebook and writing pen would be much less without you.
Do writers have a choice? To an extent, yes, we can be deliberately lazy or we can procrastinate, but in the end we write things down and share them, the compulsion of words, the drive of expression...and the ocean however big and intimidating always needs new supply.
Is what you write worth it? Definitely.

this is so true: "That I am but a drop in the ocean
Of words that have been written down"
words are so utterly fascinating
they dance and sing, yell & whisper
an endlessness to their formations
I love learning them

Dearest Amor,

This is amazing . . . Right on and well said. We are so glad you did not know, what you believe you should have, as we would not have been blessed by your written word. Life is the way it is for a reason and your gift has many of them. None of which you will know until you reach the pearly gates . . .

Spiritual hugs~

Amor, you are a genius of the written word, so profoundly in touch with passion and purpose. This poem is from one who is in touch with who they were meant to be.

Sobering thoughts, Amor; but had you not written, your readers (me) would not have the privilege of knowing you as we (I) do now. Love and peace to you,

"it's the words that sing, they soar and descend...I bow to them...I love them, I cling to them, I run them down, I bite into them, I melt them down...I love words so much...The unexpected ones...The ones I wait for greedily or stalk until, suddenly, they drop..."

Pablo Neruda*

I'm so glad the words captured you and you captured them. Stunning poem

Amor, you have a distinct passion for writing poetry. It is a privilege to read this. It is a description of a man who values the written word and has an unquenchable quill. The years you have put in, show on this page. To trade it in couldn't hold a candle to what it might be replaced with. You have conquered the rhyme and spent well your time. Be well always.

Love,
Sage
