Sir Francis Drake Be My Name

Sir Francis comes to say a bit at a time to a woman that hears spirits.

Sir Francis Drake Be My Name
In my sailing round the world I found a many a woman able to tell my story; but only one is writing now as I wish all to know that fortune is all I wanted, I gave me Queen what made her pleased but never a man would I put a jewel upon his hand. This woman me calls out to from beyond. My need is great to share all my deeds.

The darkies were my favorites and after the one got pregnant from around the “horn” I put her on a  lonely island it was, never to want my seed to show his face where the cliffs are so white I felt no pain for she promised to slit her throat to make my deed unchristian by her own hands not mine She was not as kind as many believed and ordered me to throw the men over the sides so they could not see her belly so full with a white man’s doing and tell when next we went to the “horn” that Drake had gave her a babe. Never to see her or it again.

The sea was my favorite to sail upon; the inland waters were too quiet for me and I need to catch the  glimpses of my next Spanish galleon to destroy. As my heart grew dark there were never a person spared. The need to keep my bounty’s worth hidden was all I thought about. Finding islands to drop a trunk or two and put the fate of a slave on top the crate where we buried it making sure the gold and jewels stayed hidden for me to go back too.

Did I let any sailor of mine learn my ways to navigate? No. The sea was mine and I sometimes blind folded sailors as we round a landmass that he could identify and come back to retrieve my gold. Yes, it be my gold. Only some I gave more to because they followed me into battle. Much the seas were full then of swords and muskets. I wanted to return and put on map locations best to come back to without showing my marks.

Me trust was none.
Me eyes were open day and night. Only the Queen agreed that I bring back sailors and leave them drunk on shore and pick up more that never saw a Spanish ship and what I found on board or where I put the silver and gold that shone bright in sunlight.

Call me pirate or call me Sir, I was but a man among many men hunting gold. Me wife did know a bit. She was given a few of me maps and she hid them along the slabs within our home. Not even I could find where she put them, a woman as greedy as the best in those days. She did give clues within her sewing and turning of the needles to show a scene that was full of colors and locations where I put the loot.

Enough for now. I hear and see the sound of more pirates that want to tell this woman what they did. I shall stay and keep them away. Trust no person when it comes to treasure. Another day I will give her more to say. Maybe one of you will find a box or two to make your day.

A very interesting retro written story poem from a famous entrepreneur and privateer for the Queen of England, Sir Francis Drake. Along the way creating many injustices in an effort to conceal riches from even his closest shipmates. It's interesting to see how long that secrecy will hold out against modern treasure hunting techniques.
