I used to sit on the river at night
open a beer and wait for a fight.
I'd toss in my line and wait for the test.
I was good at drowning worms,
Yes one of the best.
I'd put up my feet,
lean back on a log
and wait for that moment
to hook a big hawg.
The frogs would be croakin',
the crickets they'd chirp.
I'd just lean back,on my beer I would slurp.
The moon she would glisten.
The stars they would shine.
I'd just sit and listen,
keep an eye on my line.
It never really mattered
if I caught any fish.
It was the rest that I gathered,
not the splash or splish.
When daylight would come
I'd pack up my gear,
head back to town,
by now out of beer.
I hope to return to that magical place,
to drown me more worms,
and put a smile on my face.
