For those of you who do not understand ... perhaps this will help. I met this young man before he left for California ... carrying his HIV status like a flag ... he was so beautiful and so talented ... and he is no more.

Urban Fairy Tale

(Upon journeying into the rainbow world,
seeking Oz, wearing red shoes ...)

You are not from here, he said:
Half question, half statement,
Tinged with doubt, colored with hope.
Yes, I said, but only from, not of.
These narrow eastern country roads
And more narrow country souls
Have never been the kind of place
That I would claim as home.
Thank whatever gods there are
For that.
I much prefer a pounding bass
To a bible thumping in my face.
Halleluiah,
            Thank you, Jaysus!
                        Do I hear amen?
                                    Ain’t it funky.
Had I not gone away, I would have been
Doomed to being of, not from.
No music in that world, no glitter,
No rapier of wit to pierce the heart of sameness.
Worse luck:
I would have missed the richness
Of so much laughter
And so much love.

He LIVED while he was alive--what a pity he's gone--but a beautiful memorial to a Free Spirit. "Sail on, sail on, Sailor..."
