Having recently admitted my father to a care facility has brought my own future into greater perspective. Bette was right: Old age ain't for sissies.

More than once
I have been
Close to Death,
And chose
To ignore It.
I was twice
Close to being
Murdered.
And chose
To Ignore It.
And so survived.
Only now age and history
Have brought us closer.
Death is an old friend.
I give him his space.
And for the moment,
He gives me mine.

Patti,

I appreciate the wisdom in your confrontation with age and history.
More than that, I admire the talent in which you express it; to wit:

Death is an old friend.
I give him his space.
And for the moment,
He gives me mine.

"...I give him his space...He gives me mine."
What a generous and wise way of looking at the reality of living and dying, Patti. You face the truth with affirmation of what is, is.
This is very fine indeed.

Strong "voice" for those that have lived long enough to know. Death is an old friend, indeed, and death stays close.

Patricia,
I liked this, Patricia. I also give him his space, until he's ready for me. I hope you read my poem, we think alike, except mine's a much different viewpoint on death.

Blessings,
~Linda
