A little poem I wrote when I was a little nervous about laser eye surgery.

Nervous, uncomfortable patient sits and waits,

In a waiting room blank of thought.

Unnoticed, the pale receptionist works behind fresh flowers,

She fidgets and waits in her oversized chair,

To be called in.

Room of white, she enters,

Welcomed by the gesturing doctor, another large chair.

Wandering eyes wait as the procedure is explained,

Doctor drones, his cold blue eyes piercing, words jumble together.

Nods and smiles, after all this she wants to see clearly.

Sooner than thought,

She’s finding herself there in another white room,

Bright lights and electrical flashes, she hesitates.

Needle numbs, bee sting; she’s drowsy,

In confusion and fear; can’t talk, will wake soon.

She wants to see clearly.

Morning comes, the sun on her face,

Rested, awakes from her deep sleep.

Eyes shut, slowly peels off the cover,

Opening of eyes unsmiling, old dread returns,

Dark shapes and grinning monsters.

She cannot see the people that hear her scream.

The anxiety and panic comes through beautifully. I can't imagine this type of procedure. When I recently went through my back surgery, I was eager to do it. I wanted the pain to stop. I wasn't scared at all. Okay, maybe scared of all those docs seeing me in my altogether.... lol. Great job on the tone in this poem:)

You have recreated and shared the "experience" very effectively via your verses, Bronwen. Having had four eye operations, I can relate to what you have expressed. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis
