A boy and his bike

Poem Artwork

I climbed to the top of anticipation

held fast the reins that keep me alone,

My brothers calling behind in the distance

A struggle in deception the first to be home.

I push what I can from the speed I can muster

lay the burden of hope on the hill underway

draw out the points in the line and the distance

A forgone conclusion to a hot summer day.

The voices outside closed off and empty

The voices inside alive and their wild

The hill and the wind enlighten my senses

A first taste of freedom for a wandering child

A new taste of freedom, a sense of adventure

Caught in the whirlwind which he will like

Ode to his birthday with six years before him

the voice that’s inside to a boy and his bike

The cover of darkness will hide what I do

Assembly required, my tools at my side

I can still taste the wind as I unpack the box,

The anticipation, the thrill of the ride.

Tomorrow is his day for anticipation

As I look back on one of life’s thrills.

All those years have closed behind me,

But it felt so good, to be back on that hill!
