Villanelle: Is this a Sport or some kind of psychotic hoax
[Dedicated to the fearless Spanish referee Antonio Mateo LAHOZ who dished out 18 Yellow Cards in the Argentina-Netherlands 2022 FIFA Quarter Finals and booked two Argentinian officials to boot ( 8 YCs to Arg. players and 7 to Dutch players. Hurray !)]

Is this a Sport or some kind of psychotic hoax
Do FIFA referees for fun look the other way
Trainers cover mouths in fear of lip-reading blokes
Tie players hands behind backs not just for loud jokes
Do players play for screaming fans flags flapping away
Is this a Sport or some kind of psychotic hoax
A referee who blows not whistle in no sweat soaks
If his assistants keep their flags down under way
Trainers cover mouths in fear of lip-reading blokes
Which player turns not back to camera name cloaks
While corners of eyes scrute the screens on high sway
Is this a Sport or some kind of psychotic hoax
So do fans eke out lurid faces for their folks
Trainers jump from benches to yell orders none obey
And they cover mouths in fear of lip-reading blokes
It matters little who plays for Love of Sport, folks
All that counts hook or by crook carry CUP away

All play for the Love of sport, sometimes it's lost, but always will find it's way back. As usual, with just a few words you paint a big picture that I can see within.
This's the upteenth time you say how repetition in the lilting lines of villanelles annoys you, and yet your comment on Sattler's poem this week says...
'and in the Hallelujah Chorus by Handel, repetition works on the brain nicely to embed the feeling in long-term memory.

And what's the difference, Monseigneur, between "soccer" and "futball", if I might ask. TW
Your poem is part of the culture of most of the world except the United States. American style football is king here with soccer rather than fútbol. But fútbol is growing in popularity especially when the United States ranks high among the FIFA.
While soccer is a simpler game, I'm not really familiar with the rules and find the low-scoring matches boring.
I know you seem to favor the Villanelle format, I find the reputation annoying to read.
