An innate fear of animals keeps a surviving colony of people prisoner, and a ruler known as "The Rat King" threatens their existence with pestilence, plague, and death. A young girl has the strength to overcome a law that bans reading and writing, finding friendships unknown in the world in which she lives.

There was little to be seen but a small lonely city. It was surrounded by a thick, empty
wood and beyond the forest was a fast, and crushing cold river. The world seemed to end there,
and no one had ever walked beyond the water, which was essentially the end of their humanity,
as they knew it. Beyond the wild angry river a high castle could be seen, sitting upon a steep,
treacherous hill. The dwellers of the castle looked down upon the island city, watching it, and
reminding all inhabitants that they were prisoners there.
