Imagine that radiation has destroyed the environment, caused many forms of life to perish, has made people sick, but has left a species untouched. Wolves have a natural immunity. In a not so distant future, a few men have created a biosphere to try to recreate a balanced system, recreating plants, insects, birds and other animals. They have spent years trying to discover why wolves continue to flourish. A teenage girl, named Alex, has found the answer, but is hesitant to share because it will also reveal a secret she has desperately tried to hide. This is a girl, who after recently losing her memory, has slowly begun to rediscover herself. What she found was not what she expected. Together with a horse and a wolf, she still has a murder to solve. It isn’t just plain old teenage emotion getting in the way, her sleep is constantly disturbed by nightmares. How will she survive such tumultuous times?
This is a science fiction, through perhaps a very near future. The subplot of the story is global warming, and there is also an emphasis on the destruction of the natural order, the extinction of nearly all animal and avian life.

There was snow on the ground, and the tall mountains created the illusion of a wall around them. There were dry fields, icy winter images, and many barren trees that reached gnarled branches into the sky. She knew immediately that this was a special place, but did not know why the thought had occurred to her. Marcus began to push the chair through the snow, and the wolf followed. There was a dark forest beside them, the kind of place filled with mystery. The mournful wind brought a groan from the old trees, and the branches crashed together. There was a dark blur moving closer, silently gliding through the trees like a ghost. The wolf growled.

I highly recommend this book, The Wolf Experiments. Alex is not a normal teenager, nor does she have normal troubles. After recently losing her memory, she finds herself an orphan. Her new home is a biosphere, of sorts, closely protecting the last of several species. Radiation has now damaged the environment and has left many species of avian and animal life extinct. Alex must piece her life together with vague hints from her new friends, and from a journal she found in an old destroyed laboratory. With help from a horse and a wolf, she follows a path of rebirth, and discovers a secret that might save the world.
