Sorry for not being around much of late. Those who leave comments know that I always return the courtesy. Even when "in my zone," dreams still happen. Some are unforgettable.

Daddy’s Girl

Not too long ago, I had a dream.  It was a dream where I was with this little girl; I assume she was my daughter.  I already have a very fine son and two lovely and intelligent daughters so I do not know why I would have this intensely loving, protective, and proud feeling about having another; but that is certainly the way I felt.

In any event, in the dream in question, I find myself proudly parading this little girl (no specific name comes to mind but she is probably between four and six years old) around a town that seems oddly dated; like something out of the late 1800’s.  We are holding hands and walking slowly down what I presume to be the main, and perhaps the only, street in town.  People nod and smile in approval.  The little girl is dressed as though we might be going to church or to a birthday party.  She is wearing a pink dress, white stockings and white shoes.  I feel this intense sense of pride and protectiveness.

(At this point in the dream, I awoke.  I felt a great sense of loss and immediately willed myself back to sleep.  As has happened to me before, I found myself back in the dream.)

The little girl and I are still walking slowly and eventually come to the end of the street and past this building that seems to be completely open to the street.  I see a shop where my father is working.  He nods and smiles.  In what seems to be a family room, I sense a sibling but although I feel whom he might be (I have six in real life,) I cannot make him out so I am not sure how he feels.  Then, in what appears to be the kitchen, I see my mother.  She also nods and acknowledges our presence but just stands there.

(Dreams are much like movies sometimes.  They use cinematographic techniques such as flashback and foreshadowing and time seems quite meaningless.)

The little girl and I are now on a high wooden platform with no railing.  It is above railroad tracks.  She is thrilled running back and forth and loves to hear the tapping sound of her shoes on the wooden boards.  Suddenly, she seems to lose her balance and to my horror, I see that she is about to fall off the platform.  It seems that I am too far away to catch her but just before the dream can become a nightmare, I am able to catch her and prevent her fall.  I can feel the anguish, the fear, and the beating of my heart.

(Fade in a new scene.)

The little girl and I are now on the ground by the railroad tracks.  There is a sense of happiness and peace again.  We see an approaching train.  It is old.  It has a steam locomotive.  People are leaning out the windows and waving at us.  The little girl and I, still holding hands walk toward the train.

(That was the end of the dream.  At this point, I woke up and it was actually time to get on with my day.  I felt very good inside.)

PS:  It is interesting to me that at no point in this dream is there any sign nor feeling of a mother in the picture at all.  Again, this is odd since my children have a great mom with whom (although we are divorced), I remain friends.

The dream always makes me wonder on what marvellous and mysterious journey the little girl and I are about to embark upon.

This is a recurring dream.

A beautiful story. I found Mary’s comment to be true. I had a reoccurring dream of travelling with my brother on the bus and not finding my way home. Then one day I as lost and travelling alone. This was after he passed. The bus journeys together were me visiting him in the care home after he got paralysed in an accident. Now whenever I take the bus I feel he is with me. Your dream could be about your grandchild, your own child sho7ld you remarry. Innocence and love.

I used to do dream interpretations. The FEEL of a dream is more important than the dream itself. A reoccurring dream is usually prophetic. I kept a dream journal for 10 years in the 80's. It's interesting to see how much you get to know about yourself. ONLY you can know what this dream means. VERY interesting to me. We can both dream about a cat eating food from a ditch, and the dream will mean something different to each of us.

Very good read Regis. I love to study my dreams. Thanks for sharing.

This was moving for me for several reasons. I was only a Daddy's girl on rare occasions, which I have written of in "The Train Penny" and "The Little Dipper." The rest of my life was unhappy due to this same father. This story represents the relationship I wish I could have had, and that every child should have, with their father. I am thankful for the happy ending your dream had. Love your mind and writing. L

This must have something, to do with your former life. It seems as though everyone was happy,to see you back with the little girl who was in need of a father's protection. Perhaps she was from an orphanage from where you have adopted her, and that is why you do not know her mother. I'm glad you were able to protect her from danger.

Another possibility could be that this little girl is now one of your daughters who may have been in need of your special attention; or she may feel that she needs your special caring attention.

This is just my own interpretation from reading this dream.

This is so simple Regis, as an enlightened one that I am, this is a past life of yours. Nothing to therapeutically analyze it speaks for itself. Our past lives integrate into our present lives, sometimes something that was unresolved only known to the one who is experiencing it. I sense the desire to protect the little girl. I have a daughter and know the feeling. So much darkness can happen in the world that we fathers want to protect our daughters from. Your dream appears to be a dream about providing protection. Now, I want to write a poem about fathers and daughters. Yesterday, I heard on the radio that 6 out of 10 women in America are molested sexually during their lives. I thought, "So many! How horrible!" and focused of my daughter again. How can we protect them 24 hours a day 7 days a week? On the news this week was the story of the girl that was abducted be a sexual predator at age 11 and 18 years later, she is free from this monster. Hearing that news, I thought of my daughter once again. She's in high school now and dating. Argh! There's a picture my wife put on the mirror in the bathroom I use. She took this picture when our daughter was seven and we were hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. Daughter is sitting on my shoulders. At that age, her hand was too small to hold hand to hand so she would hang onto my small finger when we were out walking, which we did a lot when she was younger. Now that she's a senior in high school, we see less of her. She doesn't take walks with us anymore. Her hand is bigger too. There ws somthing special about those walks like the walks you have with the dream daughter.

This is beautifully written and expressive. I hope for your conclusion Have you considered this may be a memory from your past life? For years I had recurring dreams of hands stretching out of railroad cars and did not realize that truly I was seeing the misery of those awaiting concentration camps. I still may not view data from that era without a sense of illness. And I was a member of the underground. Dreams usually only relate to upcoming daily events. If it were not recurring, it would mean pleasing prospects and domestic joys to see the little girl but with a warning that a person is trying to obstruct your pathway in love or in business or that your business is in need of attention because enemies are trying to upsurp you (railing and railroad). And from your most accomplished and sound background, I would believe it was a time so frightening to you in the past that you relive it trying to change the outcome. I hope that I am wrong

Dreams are mysterious and can lead to realities. Perhaps you were longing for the nearness of your daughters, or you felt that you have missed something that you were part of their childhood. I don't know, it could also be that little girl belonging to you in another lifetime, and is the same girl who might be looking for you in this lifetime.

Dreams are very strange, but when you interpret them, it is what we subconsciously need. I greatly love to have my dad around me more often when I was a little girl growing up. I sense that I was deprived of that, from my birth to until I was almost 7 years old. I often thought how good it might have been and how much more closeness I would be with my dad had he been in my life from birth 'til 6 - 7 years old. However, I also counted my blessings that I was sent to live with my grandparents, and my grandfather had showered me with lots of love that I needed for that period of time.

I counted myself lucky. Some other Chinese girls were not so lucky at all.

Your yearned for your daughters presence. Perhaps you have missed being around them during that age period of their lives? We always dream what we yearn for. Even now I'm continuing to be looking for my mom and dad whenever I dream.

Just know I understand your feelings.

Lots of love,

You know, Reg, in my home library three of my favorite books are "The Diagnostic Criteria, DSM IV," "The Snynopsis of Psychiatry (Behavioral Sciences, Clinical Psychiatry),"--903 interesting pages--and "The Portable Jung," 659 engrossing pages which I have practically committed to memory in the past 10-15 years. (Explanation: One of my best friends for twenty years was Dr. Carl Lyngel, Chief "shrink" of the California Superior Court, San Diego.) I swear that I've read an account of your "Daddy's Girl" in those tomes somwwhere.

Like the reviewers posted below, I'm tempted to expound on my interpretation of your recurring dream. But since I've never suffered from even the suggestion of "writer's block," I must control my impulse or I could easily write another 20,000 or so pages right here, right now. (Now, aren't you all glad that I have such magnificent impulse control?)

Bottom line: You sound very much like a loving, caring person having a wonderful dream, all indicating what a sweet, normal person you are.

But your "Daddy's Girl" is provocative, isn't it? (Still, with your background, you knew that all the time, didn't you?)

I enjoyed this immensely. You're a great writer, Reg!

I could hardly believe you had a similar dream as I had many years ago. In my dream, I raised my baby girl to the age of three. It was like three full years of living, raising and loving the child.
I was totally devestated when I awakened and knew I would never see that baby girl again. I still think of her and mourn the loss to this day.

Many years later, my cousin showed me a photo of his three year old girl. She looked just like my dream girl. It seemed strange to see her wavy dark hair just like my little girl. Straight dark hair is the norm in our family.

I understand such an experience leads to heartfelt mourning.

Your little girl....invisible yet deep inside. your subconcious can interpret your fears and desires in all shapes and form. It may be protecting a vulnerable spot inside of you hense "litle girl" feeble and sweet. In that sense you will not assume she is your inner "boy" needing protection. I may be wrong....maybe you seek a desire to love, adore and protrect and being a father of older children....you do not need to do as much, now. Your dream in either way brings you peace and let's you feel closure with what your mind cannot interpret outside of your subconcious.

This is very interesting Reg. The dream is a symbol of the happiness in your life, and the little girl almost falling is a symbol of the anguish in your life, but saving the little girl from falling strengthens your resolve to deal with the bad in your life and overcome it. The surrealness in this story shows passing scenes of family life that you once knew, from a little boy on up through being an adult.

The walking toward the train is also a symbol of a journey you have yet to take. The peacefulness and tranquility in your life is what the dream is all about, even tho there may be bad scenes in the dream, you overcome them, and peace comes once more to you.

This is a very good write Reg, I'm glad I stopped by.

This Is My take On Your Dream & You Know I am a “emotional feely” person & this comes from my first thoughts I Feel so here it goes :

The little girl could represent the child within you, and not at all a subconscious desire for another daughter. Perhaps the reason for dreaming of a girl instead of a boy is this internal private thought of identity that you feel related to, or a desire to have, or a desire to be, or become closer to, and this unprotected or even hidden part(s) of you from your childhood all still needs to look up to a protective figure of sorts & find love & acceptance for who they are within a total package. The people you see in the dream nodding with approval could be your desire to be accepted, or it could be your finding the acceptance you have longed for since you were a child. Like a memory resurfacing & finding closure finally.

The buildings & street into the family room give me the feel that you have strong bonds to your family structure, maybe not your actual family who raised you, but maybe your “ideals” of family which could also represent your openness with your family in & throughout your life time. Or your needed desire for it. You walk hand in hand with this little girl in front of your family because you have no shame about this side of your most secret/sacred/protected inner self. The feminine side of you. The part of you , that you feel males do not represent. Beauty, Tenderness, Sweetness, Purity, Darling, & Lovable ect. Your father accepts you in this dream, and you mother does too. Your wanting to show all sides of yourself to your family, but for some reason they all don’t see. (your siblings)

The wooden platform gives me the feel of a stage, or a pedestal & a very old one being it is made of wood. The railroad tracks to me represent your deep feelings of fear & danger to showcase yourself on stage, or to place yourself on a pedestal without supported validation. Because of some major crossroads event in your life that is there underneath you. Tap dancing is freedom to express joy (even sexual pleasure) regardless of the potential danger (railroad tracks) & lack of safety rails (support) being so high up is a sense of self esteem. But a very risky place to be sometimes, depending on your surroundings. She loses balance & nearly falls… to me feels like a part of yourself (what part of yourself?) that you have protected with great vigil was off balance for a little bit & you managed to save yourself from what seemed like, or could have been a real emotional tragedy & The thought of losing the part of yourself which you value so highly is devastating & you must be more careful.

I feel that the train (being it is old) & the people who are all waving at You & the little girl represents Your Train of all your memories from long ago coming to you in a very cherished fashion.

Your ex-wife isn’t in this dream because this is not a dream about her. This is a dream about you & your very protected inner self & your journey to acceptance since you were little (the little girl)

Reg,
Nice write, with pauses to allow the reader to think before the rest of the tale resumes. Kind of like a commercial break, and very refreshing! I have had similar recurring dreams, where the subconscious misinterpreted what was bugging me in the waking world. In one of my dreams my wife, who as you know is disabled, was always getting lost and I couldn't find her. I finally realized that my mind was keying in on the word lost, but used the wrong definition. My fear is not that I am afraid of her getting lost, like in a shopping mall, but lost as in losing her in death. It was a rare moment of clarity for me as to how the mind quietly works on our problems in the background of life; in this case in my dream, where I was sure to pay attention. I don't know if this will help you or anybody else, as it may be just my wiring that is screwed up!
In your case, I think you nailed down the meaning of your dream in your title. The dream involves your relationship with your own daughters, who likely will or already have left home, hence the train. You don't want to lose that relationship you have had since they were tiny girls, and the father in you wants to protect them, even though they may go or be far away. Conclusion: You are a loving, protective father who cares about his daughters, even though you realize they are growing beyond your ability to reach them physically or emotionally. Still, the father in you will never abandon them or let them go out of your life, for in your heart they will always be "Daddy's little girls." Reg, thanks for the engaging story. Rockie Coppolella

You've told this simply and beautifully, Reg, so real and true. I'm no dream interpreter but since it's a recurring vision it may be inside your head a search for lost innocence. Whatever it is, you've shared it wonderfully and I thank you for the experience.

Hi Regis,

What a wonderful dream. Walking hand and hand with my kids is something that makes me very happy. People, strangers can tell how joyful I am… smiling and nodding at me.

I’m wondering if you have a grand-daughter…or perhaps there is a baby on the way…somewhere in the family.

Take care and thanks for sharing.

William.

Very interesting, Regis! I like how you kept the integrity of the dream in tact by adding the bold print comments in between each section. Those moments were mood-setting. I can't help but wonder if this is a glimpse into a past life. I also wonder if more details will unfold when the dream returns. Thanks for sharing this! Love and Hugs,

Regis as I read this I know indeed recurring dreams are from the Lord, in my insight, the litte girl is part of your present past, innocence of tender love, needing a strong arm to hold on to her, she is either your future granddaughter or the daughter of someone you lose in this lifetime that is very close to you, as you walk the train track, that is the many miles ahead in which you must travel, whether good or bad, the tiny innocence of the child will carry you thru, seeing your parents in this dream, they are giving you approval for they have raised a son they are very very proud of, ..... Regis, you have been given a gift enjoy it as it comes, Take care and Blessing's too you Always Valerie

Some dismise dreams as such, others look inside themselves searching for that signal under their noses, omens come in all shapes and colors and a recurring dream is telling you something, only you can interprete it.

Regis,

This is a wonderful story. Perhaps the little girl could be a future granddaughter, or just represents a peaceful innocence in your life. Enjoyed.

the nocturnal world of dreams has always been a place of great complexity and mystery to me -- regardless of all the supposed expert analysis offered by psychologist and psychoanalyst -- there is a place, where we dwell in physical duality, but psychological seperation -- dreams -- interesting write as usual Reg -- thanks for sharing this interesting write -- peace and sweet, uncomplicated dreams -- JMW

Wow Regis... this was so interesting to read... I can't begin to guess what it means...so many below have given their ideas, and mine would be similar..altho I do know that dreams often are basically our subconscious trying to tell us something..and the trick is to figure it out... duh.. This is a story however, and like one of the authors mentions...write down if there are any changes when the dream reoccurs... We've all had them haven't we? Good writing either way... This is a great story, Regis and perhaps you should consider taking it farther and writing a story of the direction you would want this relationship to go if it were your reality. Perhaps this young girl comes to you in your dreams to awaken a story within you that needs to be written. I enjoyed the read, thank you.
Take care,
Sherry

Interesting and unique dream. Sounds like you may have somehow helped a child in the past or will perhaps be called upon to be there for a little one in the future. Like the straight forward way you presented this.

I think this is a "past life" memory my friend...the time that it takes place in, the repeat dreaming of the same scenarios...you might want to try a "past life regression" and see if it helps you make some sense of what you are dreaming. And then I want to know what you find out! This is cool stuff Reg! Love, Michelle

I have not yet read much from you so I know nothing about your writing career...

However, many women refer to the writing of their book as having a baby...for, indeed, it is very much like having one!

I see this as your dreaming of producing the great novel! Of course, there is no mother, because you alone are the mother/father/producer of your major work.

You've tried and perhaps have had material rejected (falling) however, you keep coming back to saving it...

You KNOW you have it in you!

That's my interpretation, without further investigation...What do you think?

Dreams can be amazing. You say it is a recurring dream. Do you ever notice any changes in details from one dream to the next?
I have found that some dreams I have remembered and wondered what they meant...become meaningful years later when I found out what they meant.
