“the american dream”

It was a beautiful, sunny day in Washington, DC. The sun reflected the shadow of the White House onto the plush green yard. A few people could be seen walking slowly near the historic capital building, but there was not much commotion on the streets at all. In fact, it was extremely quiet—considering that Washington is usually a noisy, bustling city with tremendous traffic problems. But not today.

President George Dubyah, who had recently been selected as the new U.S. President arose from his bed and proceeded through his normal routine for the morning---exercising, washing up, and eating breakfast. He gave his usual greeting to his wife and to others as he headed down the hall to his office. The President had not been in the Oval Office more than 10 minutes when the phone rang. It was V.P. Dick —and he was extremely upset and talking loudly---“ George Dubyah---!!! We have been unable to locate the Secretary of State –Colonel Powell!!!” he shouted. The President responded, “What are you talking about? He is usually around here someplace. Have them page him.”

“With all due respect, sir, we already did. We have been trying to find him all night and all morning. At first we thought it was just that he wanted some privacy for a while…but he seems to be missing,” answered Dick.“Well, have you tried his home? Call his wife,” the President replied in a problem-solving, presidential tone.

So Dick responded, “ I don’t think you fully understand. We have done all of that and more. No one answers at his residence either.”Then the Vice President shouted….”Oh!! Turn on your TV—Channel 5. A newsflash is on that you must hear.”So George Dubyah turned on the small TV in his office and watched the newscaster give a shocking report. Tim Brokow was sitting there in his usual news-reporting position talking about a major mystery that had occurred.

The news reporter stated:“ This is a breaking news flash!! For some unknown reason, hundreds (if not thousands) of people have suddenly been reported missing. Police and sheriff offices have been bombarded with phone calls from frightened people who claim that they cannot find their friends, co-workers, and neighbors.”

Then the reporter showed TV film footage of visions of houses and apartment buildings in neighborhoods that appeared to be abandoned and deserted---no children playing in the parks, no body walking a dog---no signs of life. Brokow’s voice intervened and said,“Stay tuned for further updates on this huge mystery…..”George Dubyah was pacing the floor by this time. He yelled over his speaker phone to Dick ---”round up the staff and get them in here for a meeting !”
