Too often we leave our loved ones with something we say or do that we regret.

Looking out the big bay window actually frightened me this evening, making me realize it was going to be a treacherous trip to my mother's home.  It hurt me that we argued on the phone but I wasn't going to let anyone tell me what to do.

My daughter had the nerve to tell me that if I was a good mother, I would listen once in a while to her opinions and actually hear what she is saying.  Why should I have to take advice from a child.  Ok, so she's 25 years old.

Frustrated, I worked my way out the door, carrying an armload of bags, "damn," I almost slipped.  This reinforcing my fear of what was coming.  Yes, I could see a snowstorm developing from the north.  Not something I particularly needed at this time.

Once on the highway, there was no turning back.  My family were expecting me and I was determined this wouldn't stop me.  They may think I react badly to certain situations.  I will straighten them out once I arrive at my destination

Suddenly about an hour on the dark highway, a huge animal appeared in my headlights.  I swerved to avoid it  so I slammed on my brakes, but it was too late.  Hitting the animal as I lost control of the wheel.  I was thrown forward, my ribbs hitting the steering wheel as I kept propelling into the windshield.

Everything going black, as my life passed before my eyes.   Hearing the terrible things I said to my mother on the phone and the nasty way I spoke to my child the night before, all came back to me, as if it was happining all over again.

Finally coming out of the blackness and remembering.  I realized I was alone.  Painfully looking around,  seeing no traffic on the road .  The terror set in.

I could die out here by myself, I won't be able to tell them I'm sorry and that I love them.  As I prayed for help with the tears streaming down my face.  I suddenly heard a siren in the distance.   Thank God I may get out of this alive.

As the ambulance drivers and police  gently removed me from my wreck of a car.  They realized I didn't have a seat belt on.  I was so upset and angry when I got into the car this evening I must have forgotten to strap myself in.

A long trip to the hospital and a stern warning from the police officer who escorted me.  I was lucky to be alive and yes. now thankfully, I would get the chance to make things right with my family.

excellent lesson to be learnt from this story..too many of us say cruel things and never get the chance to make things right before the loved one is gone in our lives.. very powerful words you put into your write..look forward to more of your writtings.

Hey this is wonderful and I can't wait to read what you write next, so please don't leave us hanging. Yes I remember our Mom warning us to always make sure we have clean underware on but I believe in my heart, that if I were to be in an accident, the first thing I would do is wet myself. Fantastic story Sis. Love your sis, Rose XOXO

This is a sad but gratefully happy ending story with a most valuable lesson. Your mother like my own, both being from Newfoundland and all, probably used to tell you the same thing that we would hear...put on clean underwear in case you get in accident and have to go to hospital. The underwear you forgot to change in this case was the ones that had the name of your loved ones attached. Valuable life lesson and wonderful story cuz.
