In this quote Neville describes how your assumptions work, and how they don’t work. Each of us forms assumption all the time. Your assumption is your take on a matter, your expectations, your beliefs. Your assumption is your perspective, regardless of how you derived it.

An assumption builds a bridge of incidents that lead inevitably to the fulfillment of itself. Man believes the future to be the natural development of the past. But the law of assumption clearly shows that this is not the case. Your assumption places you psychologically where you are not physically; then your senses pull you back from where you were psychologically to where you are physically. [THE POWER OF AWARENESS, Chapter 7 – ATTITUDE, Neville 1952, Revised 1992]

While Neville points out here that my assumption places me psychologically where I am where I am not physically. Giving attention to something going on around me I am playing out in my mind what’s coming next, using a condition to guide my assumption about it. This is what I do whether I like the condition or not.

Where I do not like the condition – such as being in a hostile environment, and I really do not want to be in that environment, I must realize I had assumed it was a hostile environment. It means I had sorted through the details of the experience and called the environment hostile. The more I thought about it the more the idea of being in a hostile environment took over my thinking, building momentum for more and more experiences of hostility. Even more varieties of hostility came to me in a broad range of experiences. This is the response of the Universe to my practiced vibration.

So I have to decide what I will do about this experience and this assumption. While I think the hostility after the experience had occurred, this time after the situation I am not being treated hostilely. Further, the hostility is an amplified version of what I had been thinking, and the act – whether verbal or physical, or both – is response to the vibrational atmosphere I had put in motion.

That the current environment is not hostile, I am free to decide what it really is. In this moment my environment is calm and pleasant, and this is what I like. Instead of focusing on what had happened I am free to focus attention on the calm and pleasant environment. Indeed, this is a wonderful time to bask in the energy of calm pleasure. So basking in the vibration of calm pleasure and pleasantness I am creating a new vibrational atmosphere for myself.

Yes I see evidence of my calm and pleasant atmosphere right away. To maintain this atmosphere requires a continual focus, building momentum and making this my practiced vibration. Making this assumption places me psychologically where I really want to be.
