Klairn was once a booming, industrial world. Few listened to the decrees of the environmentalists and pacifists who cried out to take care with pollution and warlike activities. Finally, much of the beautiful planet was destroyed in a devastating war. After the planet recovered somewhat, a core of Protectors was formed to keep this from ever happening again. The work pays well, but is demanding, requiring feats of great mental and physical stamina and is often dangerous, as espionage is a key part of the job. It's a fantasy job for many, but only a few make the grade.
Enter Iona Stonefinder, daughter of King Arnis's jeweler. Her Da forbids her to go to the trials, despite the fact that she is a stong competitor and one of her Province's best hopes. Though no one expects her to win, they expect her to do well. The fiesty brunette leaves without her father's blessing and knows that if she loses, she may be sent away from home; let alone punished severely. She risks all and makes the finals.
During the trials she makes many friends and falls for Lexti Anders, another competitor. The trials take on another curve as it also becomes a battle of the sexes. Will Lexti's advances distract her and cost her the final slot? This book is the ticket to this exciting event.

As he walked toward Iona, a blush slowly began to rise up her neck and face. "I know I'm okay. Don't worry about me," she said in an effort to appear calm. She began to stand.
"Nonsense, you know nothing of the sort, Iona Stonefinder," Lexti said somewhat sternly. "Now sit still and let me check you." He reached out and pressed her shoulders down firmly to make certain she remained seated. He knelt down and tenderly cupped her face in his hands and tilted her chin down. Iona's heart was beating so hard she was afraid he could hear it.
"I must admit, I am filled with admiration, Iona," he said as he gently pulled back the medicine cloth. "The mayor and the other judges were right to give you the bonus points. You kept your mouth shut the whole time you were falling out of the tree. You are well-trained and certainly in possession of a great deal of self-control. Anyone else would have yelled out." He carefully touched the wound. "I think if you are very, very careful you can proceed with the contest." Lexti began to put the bandage back on. "Let me see you stand," he said, rising and stepping back. "Here, hold on for a moment to make sure."

Erin Elder's "Protectors of Klairn" is an empowering, visual journey that I highly recommend for all ages. There is the budding (and very authentically uncomfortable) romance between the heroine Iona and Lexti, the drama of the eco-trails where plants and animals communicate to help or hinder, and the beautifully described world of Klairn itself, a montage of stunning vistas. The young Iona Stonefinder is at a crossroads in her young life; duty and loyalty to family versus following her heart and setting off on her own chosen path. She is not quite certain of her fate, but shows the courage needed to proceed towards her goal. I found the telling of her story spirited, and wished that I had book two in my hands when I had finished. The Protector Trails are the backdrop of a fast moving plot concerning Iona's discovery of the limits of her strength, will, trust and determination. It also tells the story of her emergence into womanhood. I found Protectors of Klairn to be a refreshing tale of intelligence, kindness and wit (instead of explosions) being used to solve and overcome problems. I found the telling of her story spirited, and wished that I had book two in my hands when I had finished. Thank you Erin!

Generally not my genre...but you go girl! Extremely imaginative, and incredibly sexy. Going on my "to buy" list.
Literally could not put it down! I bought 3 copies. Two for gifts, as did a friend. We are both anxiously awaiting 'Rivers of Klairn' and the movie(s)! You are surely this century's answer to J R R Tolkien!

This book is on my Christmas list for my teenage grand daughters. They love to read and know they would enjoy this first in the Klairn series
Like I said before, I love fantasy. Yours is realy different from anything I have ever read. Have to buy it now so I can read it. Plus I also love series.
I'm also writing a fantasy series, I have a chapter on my authorsden site. It's called Eli Harris and the Dark Knight.

Very well written and fun to read. I"m already looking forward to her next book.

This book reads as fast as a wildfire, but is a lot more fun! There's a lot of action from a environmental viewpoint, a nice romance blossoming, & an exciting contest. The details are great, & make you think: "When's the movie coming out?"
