Elizabeth Franklin, a creative director at an ad agency, is a great mother with lots of friends. She’s such a charmer that nobody minds she’s controlling everything. She leaves little notes, “Back at 10. ETCO., Love, Elizabeth.” ETCO as in “Everything Taken Care of.”
John Franklin, a lawyer, thinks he’s got it made, great career, great marriage for 17 years, three great children, the kind of life that professional people enjoy on Manhattan’s East Side.
Arranging details is what Elizabeth is good at. John never looks at details. Then he does.
Elizabeth asks her two best girlfriends, “Can a husband pay too much attention?” The other women act as if she’s crazy. Both say, “Give me some of that!”
John starts to wonder where she goes when she goes out. When she’s in the shower, John glances at her datebook, sees a tiny letter r in several places.
When he starts to strip away her defenses, Elizabeth struggles with whether she should accept this. Elizabeth asks her secretary, “Suppose a man says he loves you, he wants you to drop everything and go to Alaska…Do you go??”
When Elizabeth was twelve, her father left her mother, devastating the woman’s life. Now she’s an elderly alcoholic, there to remind Elizabeth what love can do to a woman. Elizabeth won’t let it happen to her. She has carefully created a life where she’ll be safe.
There are a half-dozen subplots, each another love story dealing with the eternal question, how far are you willing to go?
The Man Who Falls In Love With His Wife is a bittersweet look at what
we’ll do for love. Warning, this is not chick lit. It's a literary novel, more tragedy than comedy.

“John stared through an archway into the next room, Elizabeth standing there in this electric blue dress, off the shoulders, a little cleavage showing. Hmm. He wondered what he’d think if they weren’t married, he was seeing her for the first time. Great, the way she stands, very straight but not stiff. Good understated figure. And look at that nice face. Soft, even features, probably upper class, probably smart. Maybe something a little complicated behind the eyes. Definitely a lot of energy and warmth. The way she smiles at people. Very focused and then—wham!—she responds. John glanced at the half-dozen people with her, the way they clustered about her. A lot of touching, greeting, kissing. Two of the men in tuxedos, looking impressive. John wondered how she knew them, feeling some jealousy, or maybe just playing with these emotions, to see how they felt. Yep, he decided, that’s the one I want to meet. What’s her name?”
