A realistic story of a one eyed race horse and his development into a champion. This story encompasses most ot the race track language and some techniques of betting.
This is a fictional story of the Race Horse world, that illustrates and permits the reader to understand some of the complexities involved in Thoroughbred horse racing. I have endeavored to present a realistic look into the magic, excitement and just plain luck that is all part of a champion race horse. It also includes the normal everyday lives and loves of the owners trainers, and jockeys of race horses where joy, and heartbreak are as common for them as it is for all of us. I’ve included some of the vernacular( mode of expression) and language associated with the horse race community in order that a layman reader would get a better understanding and enjoyment of the narrative. Hopefully, I’ve used these expressions in a manner that makes their definition self-evident. If one is to participate in horseracing, betting , finishing order and many other expressions at the race track, one needs to talk “Race Horse”.
Excerpt
Our race plans are pretty simple. Paul leads a Sprint to the quarter pole and carries the lead as long as possible causing the field to burn a little gas staying in contention. Joey falls behind holding Chess to a 24. The back stretch should see Paul overtaken and Chess moving up on the field. The whole pack closes as they make the turn for home. This is where Chess will make his sprint and hoping it will be enough to overtake the favorites and hit the board. That’s the plan going in. No one can say for sure what will happen during the race. Most of all, I want a safe trip for all. A win would be nice, but not as important as a safe race.”
On the night of the race, Sue said, “ Ok Bud, I’m riding set up tonight ? You don’t think Paul can do 1 1/16.” Bud said , “Yes Sue , it’s all part of winning. You do your part so Joey has a better chance to win. Remember we’re in this together. You take Paul to the lead and hold it as long as you can. I can’t tell you that Paul has no chance to win, but it’s not likely. Yeah you’ve worked him at that distance , but you know where his strength and speed lies. If he pulls the field , this will give Chess a better chance to win, but don’t give up on Paul , one never knows what to expect in a horserace.”
Once again, nerves were killing Sue as the post time approached. Finally the second race was over and Bud was putting her up on Paul. She never remembered the parade to post and anxiety was getting to her as she was loaded into the gate. Taking a deep breath , she tried to calm her shaking hands. “ They’re Off!” Exclaimed the announcer as the gates banged open and the Ringing bell went off.
Paul had drawn post 5 and Sue was in perfect position to charge to the front. Paul gave her the speed she had been working on and quickly led the field by over a length. At the quarter pole, she was on the rail and led by two lengths. She turned into the backstretch unchallenged. A horse moved up on her outside and she urged Paul on, yelling in his ear. The whole field closed up on her as she made the turn into the homestretch. Horses were on the outside of her closing , but Paul held his lead.
Sue was hand riding him and screaming for him, “ Go Paul, Go!” suddenly she realized she was all alone. All of the other horses had slowed down and quit running. She was a hundred yards past the Finish Line. Joey rode up to her and yelled, “ Sue , You won ! You Won.!” Sue was in a daze and still couldn’t believe she had won. Bud helped her down and gave her a bear hug of victory.
He nearly squeezed the breath outta her and said, ‘ I still can’t believe it Sue
