Talent weds wealth to find loveless control, infidelity and near insanity through a mafia of porno and destruction. Will love win this terrifying battle?
Interior decorator Carla Martin found employment with an incredibly wealthy movie theater owner. Roy Jacobs was captivated by her stunning beauty and professional business sense. However, their partnership led to a marriage that plummeted Carla into the West Coast's dark organized crime world of pornography and murder.
While redecorating the Hollywood mansion of a mob boss, Carla was taken in by his elegant wife and met other lonely wives. But that mafia involved explicit sex, child abuse and butchery. Somehow, she got caught up with their rivals who clashed swords on turf and ethnicity. To escape Roy's control Carla could only find solace in the loving arms of another man... a cop who set his sights on her husband.
Spiraling deeper into that twisted, dangerous world, Carla's coiled mind became entangled as she wondered if her political ally would step in. Or if another knight in shining armor would save her from insanity.
Or did Roy just dig her grave?

The Dirty Mouth
Due to the possibility of any interference of the Family meetings by the police or FBI through wire taps or any other means, Harry Philips, the corporate attorney, strongly suggested the members speak in erroneous, vague or misleading terms so that nothing could be proven in a court of law that any actual events or situations were mentioned or known by the Levine Family members. This also gave the men an opportunity to challenge one another as to their eloquence of speech. In doing so they added a bit of enjoyable flair to these meetings.
Once the necessary matters were discussed, Don Levine asked if there was any new topics that needed to be covered.
Without saying anything it was obvious to the others that he was uncomfortable about having the “outsider” at the table even though he had come highly recommended by his former partner, now near death in the clutches of cancer. This newcomer was dressed well, yet unkempt and with dirty fingernails. The man had a cockiness about him as though he had been one of the Family for some time, although he also seemed uneasy even with this being his third meeting.
Harry Philips, the first partner and the family attorney as well as counselor and adviser, brought up the subject of videocassette recorders becoming prevalent on the market.
“ They're calling them VCR's. I feel that we need to watch out for them because they don't cost a great deal. Many movies are being made into cassettes to play on them and they're easy to use. Even top Hollywood movies can be rented at certain stores called video markets."
“These new gadgets, these new recoders, they may become a threat to our business, our livelihood?” asked Levine.
“Are you shittin' me?! These gawdamm things are gonna eat us outa' house and home! They're gonna' get so big that they're gonna put this industry down the fuckin' toilet. You're gawdamm right we gotta watch out for them. I'll betcha' anything that in a few years, some asshole is gonna' come up with a bright idea to make 'em so that every ass hole on the street will be able to buy one. Then you'll see our porn on them left and right and there goes your porno movie industry. Men won't pay to go into a theater to watch that shit when they can stay home and watch it for free. Every asshole and his fuckin' brother is gonna be sittin' around the room jackin' off watching what's on them and there goes our fuckin' theaters too!” He looked around the table at the men who were either looking down or away from him until he realized that no one was answering him. There was no conversation. There were no words spoken.
“What the hell's the matter with alla you guys. Cat got your tongue?”
Richard Hirsh. known to the Family as the “enforcer”, readily saw that matters were taken care of, and often, first-hand. He was the one to speak for the rest of the men.
“We do not use that kind of abusive language at our meetings.”
“What? You guys a bunch of pussies or something?”
“We are gentlemen and we speak as such at our meetings. We show our respect to Mr. Levine in doing so. There are far too many words in the English language to choose from than to stoop to use the expletives that you do.” He heard Levine clear his throat for him to go on. “Do you recall the tablets that Moses gave his people?”
“Well, yeah. They was the ten commandments.”
“And what was the first commandment?”
“Uh, well....” He knew he had better answer this question answered correctly. “I am God. You can't have no other gods around.”
“And what is the next one?” He glanced at the serious faces looking back at him. He saw what now seemed like a death squad .
“Don't use the name of God in vain.”
“Did you not just break that commandment before all of these witnesses?”
“Uh, yeah, I did. I apologize for doing that, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend Mr. Levine, or any of you...or God, for that matter.” He looked upward. “I'm sorry God, I didn't mean to offend you either, I guess...I guess I just didn't think.” He bowed his head.
The rest of the men looked at Levine. He nodded slightly, looked at the door, then at Samuel Blum. This enormous, quiet spoken black man was the body guard and protector of all of the family, their wives and children. He would instantly lay his life down for Don David Levine. Blum quietly stood up to walk over to the man.
“Let me escort you to your car, sir.” Levine nodded to Hirsh. He joined the other two as they left the room. Two returned shortly.
“The gentleman sends his regrets that he has to leave town and won't be able to attend future meetings with us”, Hirsh reported. "He voiced a deep interest in learning more about the scriptures... a burning in hell in particular."
Levine nodded. “Sometimes things are best learned first-hand. Too much knowledge is a dangerous thing. Are there any more comments about this recorder issue?”. The other men subtly shook their heads.
“Is there anything else to discuss today?” Levine asked.
“There is one thing that I'd like to cover briefly, Mr. Levine,” Hirsh spoke up. “It's about a young man from Portland and Salem, Oregon. He's taking over his father's theaters, I understand. They were established by his grandfather, Harold Jacobs.” He noticed the Don nod for him to go on.
“As I understand the grandson wants to change some of those lovely establishments to show our kind of fine films in them. He seems to have ambition, the kind we might want to look into. I thought that perhaps Mr. Levine might be interested in learning more about this young man.” As the third in command, Hirsh organized and allocated particular duties of the other family officers. His opinions we highly regarded as having been thoroughly thought out and checked for all sides of an issue to be considered.
“That very well may be something to look into. Have you been told of what kind of young man he is and what his ambitions might be?” Levine asked.
“Yes, sir, I do have some statistics about him. His Name is Roy Jacobs, twenty-nine years old with a college degree in business administration and management. He had a short marriage and has been single again for several years. He does live alone but he's reported to been seen in the company of a woman who is more beautiful and graceful than any movie star.” Levine raised his eyebrows leaning back in his comfortable black leather office chair looking into the air and then told Hirsh to continue.
“She's an interior decorator and a personal friend to Oregon State Senator Peter Nichols”.
“I think this young man sounds to be very possible interest to us. Perhaps you can take a short trip to visit this man. What do you think, Richard?”
“I certainly would like to visit those places. I haven't been to Portland or Salem for a while, now”, said Hirsh. “In my opinion, if this young man is very ambitious it would be a good thing to have him as part of our Family before the Perez or the Gorvetti “families” persuade him to join theirs. These two gangs get school kids hooked on their drugs. And if they even graduate from high school it's likely that they won't be if any use to society after that. It would be a shame to have those gangs influence someone like this Jacobs man”.
With that said Levine looked at Blum. “I want you and your men to see that these Perez and Gorvetti outlaws do not infiltrate our area school kids—at any cost”.
“Yes sir.”
The Don continued, “We know only too well their ways of persuasion so I think that in using our more gentle approach this young Portland man he would be interested joining us. I understand that the Salem area is less prone to Mexicans than Los Angles, but not so with Italians. If there is nothing else we can adjourn this meeting."
