From deep inside the woods, the chants and screams echoed through the night, waking Abby from her sound sleep. Her instincts told her not to go into those woods, to go back into the camper and drive as far away from there as she could, but she’d always been too stubborn to even listen to her own advice, and she soon found herself in the middle of a nightmare worse than any she could dream.
Father John’s church appeared at first to be a safe refuge. The young Priest did his best to help her, but strange things started happening, making her question everyone in that town. Her friend’s were missing, but she soon began to wonder; was she the real intended victim?
Father John, however, did not sleep. He didn’t want Abby to know, but he was worried. With all the evidence he saw back at the camper, he knew the fate of Abby’s friend’s was probably not good. He felt sorry for her, but he didn’t know what he could do for her that he hadn’t already done. He lifted the phone receiver several times to make sure it was still working, thinking it odd how it had stopped working. He’d never had problems with his phone lines before, and he had a growing suspicion the perpetrators were after more than Abby’s friends. He felt they also wanted her. He’d never had a problem before, but he feared he could in the near future. With just the two of them there, he wasn’t sure he could protect her. He truly believed what he’d told her… this was a house of God, and he’d always felt safe there, but to those who dwelled on the other side… He liked Abby, but her presence did test his will. Under the circumstances, he felt he had no other choice than to take her in, but to keep here there was probably the worst decision he’d made in a long time. He’d dated some when he was in high school, but his calling was higher, and it was the most fulfilling choice he’d made. He did sometimes wonder about the things he’d missed out on in his life, but it was what he’d chosen to do. He was the only son of a miner, and despite their religious beliefs, his parent’s weren’t happy about his choice. It had been more than two years since he’d even spoken to his family, and he did miss them, but everything came in a distant second to his faith. His thoughts of late however, were neither faithful nor correct. He’d felt things… things he believed he was beyond feeling, and he didn’t like it. It took everything in him to keep his hands off of her, but he couldn’t help but wondered what it would be like to just touch her. Not necessarily in a sexual way, but to stroke his fingers over the softness of her skin. His eyes closed as he remembered the last woman he’d kissed. ‘Mary Anne Sumner…’ Her name etched its way into his head. He’d stopped short of having sex with her, but it wasn’t because he didn’t want to. Even then, the calling was with him, and his conscience hounded him to back off. He hadn’t thought of her in years, but it wasn’t really her he was thinking about now. It was Abby. He loved the way her hair fell over her shoulders and the way her lips would pout when she was scared, but there were other things he’d noticed. Things he knew should be blinded to his eyes, but they were things that called out to him as a man. ‘He was still a man,’ he reasoned. His inner struggled tormented him, and he feared it wouldn’t take much for his weakness to overcome his resistance.
A light rap at the door caught his attention. His face looked up as he doorknob turned and the door pushed slightly open. John’s lips tightened, as Abby’s humbled eyes met his. “Couldn’t sleep?” he assumed.
“Neither could you, I take it,” she said, holding the door tightly to her body as she stepped through it.
John watched her snug- robed body move to the chair in front of his desk. “No phone calls I take it?” she questioned with a sigh.
“Not yet, sorry,” he confirmed.
Her head dropped to her raised hand, and though John heard that voice inside his head telling him not to leave his chair, he did. Moving behind her, pausing a brief second before his hands rested over her covered shoulders. Her left hand rose, covering his, but he pulled away, pacing behind her.
“I’m sorry,” she stated, figuring she was making him uncomfortable. “I was just wondering if my parents called.” She got up from the chair and sauntered back toward the door, shooting him a somber smile before she went through it.
‘You’re feeling it, aren’t you?’ an unrecognized voice spoke inside his head. ‘You’re wondering what she was wearing beneath that robe…You almost gave in to your needs, and they are your needs, John. Just go with it. Let it consume your being.’
“Noooooo!” John’s voice screamed out as his fists drew to his temples. ‘Come on, John… father John… you know you want to.’ His hands dropped from his head, pulling his shirt out from his un-priest like attire, to hide his shameful physical want. Grabbing his rosary from his desk before he hurried from the room, glancing toward Abby’s closed bedroom door as he passed it. The small door leading to the church burst open, his pace quickening until he reached the alter and fell to his knees. The voice had ceased, but the memory of it lingered. He now knew this event was incited by evil, for only evil would tempt him that way, and he knew he had to be strong to conquer it.
