Second chances in a place between reality and hell where the lost have to seek redemption. Also follows real life emotional family conflics.
DAVID EDWARD TRENCH was seventeen and hitchhiking across western Texas. He had ten dollars in his pocket and everything he owned was in his backpack. He was wanted by the law for three small-time robberies, but none of that was going to matter to him after tonight. In three hours, David Trench would be dead. David watched the dark and threatening sky with grave concern. Jagged bolts of lightning flashed across the distant western horizon. After each flash he counted, “One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three.” The rumbling thunder began and grew louder and louder. The storm was getting closer. Any minute now the rain would start. Every night this week, he had sought shelter from the storms and been lucky to find it in an abandoned barn or shed or thick grove of trees. Tonight there was no shelter in sight.

“Daddy!” Allison screamed.
“What is it, honey?” Todd looked back at her.
“That car!” She pointed. “It’s stopped!”
He and Sarah saw the car at the same instant. Todd hit the brakes. The car filled with the sickening smell of burning rubber as it skidded across the dry pavement toward the guardrail. Todd jerked the wheel to the left. The car skidded sideways coming up on two wheels. Todd knew they were going to roll, and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it.
They were going to die because he had been too stubborn to admit he was tired.
Jason and Allison were screaming.
The car tilted even more. For the briefest moment time seemed to stop. Todd thought about his father, his mother, Sarah, and his two wonderful children.
“NO!” He cried.
The car rolled. It hit the guardrail, metal screaming against metal, then crushing it, and continued to roll down the shallow depression between the East and West lanes. Todd saw two crosses on the far side of the eastbound lane. Two people had died here, or was it a premonition of what was to come?
Later Todd would recall that at that moment he hadn’t been thinking about dying so much as about his dad. Sarah was right. He should have tried harder. If only he had told him how much he loved him.
The car rocked back and forth on its crushed roof. All the windows had shattered. Jason and Allison were crying. They were all hanging upside down, held in by their seatbelts. Smoke and the odor of gas fumes filled the car.
A sudden explosion lit up the midnight sky.
“Todd!” Sarah screamed. “Todd!”
Sarah’s screams had come to him from far off. He hadn’t realized he had closed his eyes and was close to losing consciousness.
Sarah was struggling to get to him. “You’re bleeding!” She cried. “Todd! Answer me!”
Todd struggled to open his eyes. His hair was wet. Where did water come from?
“I’m all right.”
“No you’re not, and you weren’t answering. Your head is bleeding!”
