Our first RV trip out west. The good, the bad, and the ugly
This is a daily journal to South Dakota, Custer State Park, The Bad Lands, Devils Tower, the Geographic Center of the US in Belle Fourche, Cody, Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, the Mormon Row settlement, the Arches National PaRrk, Mesa Verde, Four Corners, NM, the Grand Canyon, and Winslow, Arizona. In Albuqueque we awoke to the largest hot air valoon festival in the U.S.
We found a beautiful RV park on the bank of the Mississippi River and discovered Mammy's in Natchez, MS.
It was a wonderful 25 days, the trip of a lifetime, but it would not be our last.

This is how our EXPLORING AMERICA FOR 25 DAYS TRIP 1 began and developed.
In January, 2019, we read about and saw a video of the great buffalo round-up in Custer, South Dakota. We learned that every year in September 1,300 buffalo are rounded up for testing, branding and sorting, some of the animals to be sold at auction. There is also a festival with over 500 vendors.
On September 27, 2019, the parking lot opens at 6:30 AM and the round-up begins at 9:30 AM. We were told to expect mud, rain, snow or some of all of the above. We were told September can be unpredictable.
Since we both are retired, Nancy thought it would be great to go and see this event live. She was picturing a thundering herd of buffalo coming over the hill and being herded into the corals.
So, mainly because of this great round-up, we began researching renting an RV for what we were calling “a vacation of a lifetime.”
We soon discovered there were not that many companies that rented RVs. Lazy Days in Seffner, Florida was the only one close that we found in the Tampa area. We called them and made arrangements to visit and check out a Winnebago Travato 59K Class B RV. We chose this one mainly because it was small and could get into places where the larger RVs could not.
The staff at Lazy Days were very nice to us and answered all our questions.
What can I say; we fell in love with it. Of course there were a few short comings like storage, the twin beds and the tiny bathroom, but we figured we could live with that. After all, at that time we were anticipating only 15 nights.
So, February 14, we signed a rental agreement for 15 nights for and put down a deposit. (September 22 to October 6). We later decided that just wasn’t enough time so on March 30th we revised the contract for an additional 3 days (September 21 to October 8).
We were all set to go. Now, all we had to do was wait and plan our itinerary and of course purchase the things we would need. The first item being a Senior Park Pass for all the National Parks. We decided on the one for just one year for $30.00. It arrived a week after we ordered it complete with a hanger for the rearview mirror.
A few weeks after signing the agreement we called Lazydays and asked if we could look at the actual RV we would be renting. They said no problem and told us it would be in the following Monday for five days. We were welcomed to come by anytime. That Monday we drove to Seffner and an employee took us to where it was hooked up. We checked out the bathroom and how the beds could be made into a queen size bed, the storage, the GPS and back-up camera, and asked a lot of questions. We came away feeling very good about the rental and even more anxious to begin this “trip of a lifetime,” as Nancy was calling it.
